Hello Kitty = My Obsession

I was going to write about another topic today but Julia said No! Do Hello Kitty! Yes, the content of this blog is being dictated by a 5 year old.

So. Parents and future parents -- if you deny something too much that your kid really really wants, it will become an OBSESSION.

When I was growing up in Hawaii, aka Paradise (or so it seems now after my adult years of living through Mainland U.S. winters), I wanted nothing more than for my mom to buy me Hello Kitty items at the local Japanese department store.

Oh how I wanted Hello Kitty stuff. Anything. And oh how I never got jack squat. My mom deemed it "tacky, plastic crap." The kicker? Now she doesn't bat an eyelash about taking Julia to the Hello Kitty store at the mall and buying her whatever the heck she wants.

Irony is a cruel mistress, yes?

So we have this:

And a few of these:

And Julia wears this to sleep:

and we read these:

Now, I'm a wee bit biased (due to MY OBSESSION) but the books are Awesomely Cute. Especially the one about Hello Kitty and her Grandma -- they paint, cook, dress up, have a tea party and watch romantic comedies -- yes that wording is used -- clearly the author knows who the REAL audience is!

You can find a Hello Kitty microwave here BTW. You know the 13 year old inside you secretly wants one. That means you too guys. Don't think that I don't know how Hello Kitty speaks a universal language to all genders.

You can find Hello Kitty books here.

And if you haven't heard this:

you are missing out.

  7. That store was Shirokiya!! (I think that was the spelling) If Julia ever sees that MAC line she is going to want it and I don't think I will have the strength of will NOT to get it.
Hello Kitty became hip because Hello Kitty has a Power That Cannot Be Denied. It's some kind of mind control obviously, is what I'm thinking.
