A Very Special and Cozy Book

I’ve had ‘Little Richard’, by Patricia Scarry and Cyndy Szekeres, since I was four. My copy is one of my prized possessions and I had tears in my eyes when I first read it to Julia last year. This story was one of my absolute favorites from my early childhood.

It’s out of print, but available used for a really reasonable price. The first picture above is from Ebay, but it’s also available through several sellers via Amazon. I didn’t scan the front of my own copy because I ‘decorated’ the cover with Santa stickers when I was little and somewhat obscured the title. Oopsie! Then I tried removing the sticker and saw that doing so was going to also pull up the actual book underneath. At which point I hastily pushed the sticker back down as hard as I could and mentally advised myself to STEP AWAY FROM THE BOOK.

This story is the book equivalent to a warm oatmeal cookie, straight from the oven. Warm and toasty, but not so hot as to burn your tongue.

In fact, the second chapter (there are short, little chapters) is all about Little Richard (A cute and adorable bunny boy) helping his mother make cookies. Other chapters of the book detail how Little Richard meets his best friend Prickles the porcupine, how he goes on an exploring picnic, makes a hobby horse with his daddy, and goes tracking for animal prints with his adventuring map. SO ADORABLE!!!

My favorite words, “charming” and “delightful”, don’t even come close to being enough of an endorsement for this book. If you know a kiddo between the ages of 4 and 6, you owe it to them to seek out this perfect little gem.

Do you or your kiddo need a hug today? Reading this book is like someone giving you a hug. You’ll feel happy in a I-just-drank-the-best-hot-chocolate kind of way!
