Snow Children

I love ‘The Snow Children’ by Sibylle von Olfers more than words can adequately express. It’s a silvery, moonbeamy, magical piece of enchanted goodness. Remember my love for this book that I wrote about? I found this one last year when I got into Elsa Beskow books – their styles are similar. This is the story in a nutshell:

“Poppy is gazing out of the window at the snow when suddenly she sees that the snowflakes are really Snow Children, dancing and whirling in the garden. Soon they whisk her away to the Snow Queen’s wintry kingdom”

After riding on a sleigh to the Snow Queen’s castle, spending the day being served snowy white chocolate by snowmen, and playing and dancing in a winter garden, Poppy comes back to her home at the end of the day.

I could go on and on about this book. Simple text so that a 3 or 4 year old could have it read to them, but with vocabulary sophisticated enough for 5-7 year olds. This is a MUST book in my opinion. As in, you must have it. It is so beautiful, so enchanting. But what really sold this book to me besides the story and the art. . .

SNOW BABIES FLOATING IN THE AIR. That right there sealed the deal for me.

  1. another unknown author... adding it to my ever growing must collect list.

  2. Oh these books are works of art! I like the story better in this one, I like the art better in the other. I'm thinking you need BOTH :)
