Cool Stuff I Like

I came into my room the other night to find that a little Spoka family had taken up residence. Spokas are little night lights from Ikea that are completely cool to the touch and look like little ghosts. Actually the ones selling now look like little mice. The spoka on the far right actually changes color; it’s Julia’s favorite spoka. She dragged all of them into our bed the other day to watch some TV with her, and then Andrew thought it would be entertaining for the cats to turn all the spokas on at once. They weren’t terribly impressed. Every time we go to Ikea, (not often, because it’s far from us) Julia begs for another spoka. I think we’re good at three. . .

I can’t believe that I’m writing a March COOL STUFF list! (It snowed a bit the other day.)

A friend who grew up in Hawaii with me, Greg Poirier, has created and written the new ABC show ‘Missing’, starring Ashley Judd. This Maui boy has done good – Congrats Greg! Y’all should totally watch on March 15.

Ryan from Pacing the Panic Room posted one of the coolest videos I've ever seen.

St. Patrick’s Day Cupcakes. And.....

Lucky Charms Cupcakes.

I love this herb pot. So springy! Thanks Anthro for not making it a million dollars.

The Real Housewives of Disney.

‘Ripe’ by Nigel Slater is being released this spring. I own ‘Tender’ and can’t wait for this one!

This exists? I read about Banana Cream Pie ice cream on Kelle Hampton’s blog. Getting ASAP.

A skincare line for tweens? Neato! I wanted to be an aesthetician once so this stuff floats my boat.

Cool Book of the Week: ‘The Hungry Leprechaun’ by Mary Calhoun and Roger Duvoisin. We’ve checked this book out from the library several times! Very fun story about How the Irish Discovered the Magic of Potatoes. (From a wily leprechaun of course.) Did you know dandelion soup is tasty? (But not as tasty as a potato.) Did you know leprechauns keep their magic in their fingertips?

Have a lovely weekend! Wear your house sweaters loud and proud!

  1. I'm going to have to look for that book!

I checked out the Willa site. I'm really torn about it... on the one hand I want my daughter to care for her skin (better than I did as a youth), but on the other hand some of it just feels too grown up for a tween. Does an 8-year-old need *tinted* moisturizer/lotion? Does she need a beauty regimen? Older girls, yes, but some of it just seems to grown up for younger girls. I'm so terribly old-fashioned, I know. <:)

  2. Oh see here's where I'm old fashioned -- I think of tween as 12 or 13. Like, young teen. Not 8! I think of 8 as being a little kid. I think tween might be as made up a concept as house sweaters :) I was thinking of it as skin care for young teens basically....Although I know in France, moms start introducing their girls to skincare at a really young age, not makeup (gross), but basic skin care...

  3. I'm having a flashback -- I started to get REALLY oily skin around age 11-12 and I desperately wanted to use Noxzema like my friends, but it would have wreaked havoc on my skin -- I would have been so stoked to have a cool skincare line that wasn't full of benzoyl peroxide that irritated the heck out of me! sigh....

  4. Okay, so I'm definitely okay with a girl of 12 or 13 having a nice skincare line! I would have loved to have something like that when I was around that age. Maybe I'm wrong about the tween age range... I just always thought that tween meant girls from about 8 to 11 or 12. It's scary how much grown up stuff is marketed to girls that age!

  5. I think you're right about that being the correct definition of a tween -- my mind just rebels at equating an 8 yr old in any way to a teenager...totally scary how the media tries to turn little girls into adults so early, makes me feel ill in my tummy!

  6. WHY DO I NOT HAVE SPOKA! everything you post I want for my birthday...and its not even like its soon...its all the way in July, but by the time it comes my list is going to look like David Shannon's David's at christmas! Lets all just have a grown up slumber party with our cats ok?

  7. You should totally get a Spoka Bonnie! get the changey color kind!! My cats get very pouncy at slumber parties -- whenever we put a blanky on the floor they think it's time to attack our feet...:)

  8. I love Roger Duvoisin--haven't seen this one yet!
