Tiny Tots: Clare Beaton Baby Books

Clare Beaton is one of my all time favorite illustrators. Or illustrator/craftsmen. Or embroiderers. I'm not sure what to call her. ARTIST. She sews her pictures and uses natural textiles to embellish her work. My daughter adored her books when she was a toddler! They are sweeter than sweet, and the accompanying CD's that come with several of her books are delightful, delicious and darling.

My little missy still loves her Playtime Rhyme CD. Among the wide wide world of baby books, Clare Beaton's work ranks at the very tippy top. Sooooooooo charming. Precious! So sweet! I just adore her work a little teensy bit.

  1. How cute do those look!!! I am going to have to get my hands on them! I love alternative materials and handcrafted booky goodness!

Also, hello beautiful post yesterday! I was thinking about it all day-- just lovely and sweet.

I love the picture of you gazing at your mom-- I always wish for pics with my kids and I to turn out that way, where you can see how much we love and enjoy each other-- usually they look cute and sweet and I look odd with a big bulge of double chinnyness, because I am turning my head in an awkward way. Oh, well, maybe if I had long flowing locks, perhaps that's whats missing :)

    1. Hey sweet Whitney -- just to avoid confusion, the art she makes is sewn and handcrafted. but then they are photographed and the books look like regular books with smooth flat pages :) -- I wonder if she binds together the original art to make into little books? That would be so cool.

Thanks for the kind thoughts re the 'Me and My Ma' post -- we do not have a perfect relationship by any means, but she has been my closest friend and relationship in my life, besides Andrew and Julia. I just worshiped her when I was young! Now I see the real person, and our relationship has changed and evolved, but we have always remained really tight.

    2. So these have a similar look to something Lois Elhert would make if she sewed her stuff? Still sounds lovely, if not as feely fun as I thought before. Better for clean up though.
Also, of course you don't have a perfect relationship with your mother, who does? But I love how that photo captures a perfect moment and you both look so happy to be in each other's company. Not like she's giving you the "stop picking your nose while we take the picture"look. You know?

    1. We had 'Playtime Rhymes' and a dinosaur book she did, as well as an ocean book -- but I SO wish we had had these little nursery rhyme books and the counting book! Just love them.

  4. I was just thinking today that I am not quite pleased with my selection of board books for Lucia. NOt that we don't have some good ones, but we also have a bunch of "meh" ones. I want to dump all the "meh" ones off at goodwill and replace them with lovely ones like these. Thanks for the tip!
