Cool Stuff I Like

June 1, 2012

We found a Hawaiian-style shave ice (aka snow cone) vendor at one of the local Farmer's Markets in the area! This made me all kinds of happy. There was lychee fruit flavor! That one is hard to find. Julia got three flavors which mixed into some kind of flame colored, tongue-staining, passion fruit paradise. This was GOOD shave ice -- lots of syrup. It's a huge bummer when you get the vendors who don't squirt enough syrup onto the ice. If you can't really taste a ton of syrup and your tongue isn't stained for hours afterwards, it's not good shave ice and you need to move on. (and if you're on Maui, check these guys out.)

I'm going to write down my biggest wish for this summer, in the hopes that the act of writing it down on the internet will make it more likely to come true. Please be warm, please be warm, please be warm. Last year, I kid you not, the weather did not really turn summer-like until mid-August. I swear I'm not making that up. People called it the summer that never happened. I feel like this summer will be better because I'm going to will it to be warm and sunny with all of my being.

Happy June 1 COOL STUFF:

This Artist-on-the-Go Kit is beautiful!

You must see the cuteness of these Magic Blackboards.

One of my favorite warm weather pasta recipes.

And you better believe I am making this trifle.

Darling finger puppets from Mudpuppy toys. (also these and these!)

Cute Kitty Magnets because everyone needs cute kitty magnets. AM I RIGHT?

It kills me that these pajamas are UK based. Toast = Cool Stuff.

Everyone should have a Happy Mug.

Cool Book of the Week: Actually I don't have a book for you this week. I have a video. Have you heard about 'Clara Tales'? It's a series of short fairy tale videos, narrated and performed by kids! There's one available to see right now, and more are to follow in the coming months. It's DARLING, you must see! Head over to the 'Clara Tales' website to see the video, outtakes,  fun art activities, and project updates. (The next video is going to be 'Clara and the Trolls', click HERE for a preview.)

HAVE A LOVELY WEEKEND! We've got a big trip to Ikea planned. A couple times a year, I inflict a trip to Ikea upon Andrew. He's tremendously sad about it. Julia is thrilled, she's excited for meatballs!

  1. This may be the best Cool Stuff post yet! I love everything in it... especially the artist on-the-go kit and the magic blackboards (I think I remember having those as a kid).

The only thing I could see when I looked at the link to the trifle were those gorgeous yellow cherries. I still remember the first time I had a Rainier cherry during a summer visit to my favorite aunt's house in Washington (early high school, I think). I so rarely get to eat them, since I practically have to take out a loan to buy them around here. They are so darned expensive! I'm going to dream of pretty yellow cherries tonight... yummers...

  2. Thanks SO much Miss M!! You know, my Friday Posts are just basically my own tiny Pinterest board...I'm so excited for cherry season! Our cat Rosebud likes to eat cherries, she eats AROUND the pit, can you believe?

    1. My childhood dog used to do that when we'd feed him his heart worm pill. He'd eat around whatever we'd stuffed it in... then spit out the pill! Have a wonderful weekend, Melissa!

    1. Ah yes, ma petite, the fairy book. Sometimes I forget that people actually READ what I put out there! I am saving it for a little post I'll be putting together to celebrate FAIRY DAY JUNE 24. Fairy Day has been on my calendar for weeks now. I'm gonna assume that it's on everyone else's agenda as well, RIGHT??? I almost had a tiny pants accident when I found out there was an actual recognized FAIRY DAY,

  5. Wow, I must agree, this is a great Cool Stuff list! The art set, the Magic Blackboards... (My grandmother did find one of the vintage American variety magic blackboards at an estate sale once. I don't know where it's hiding now, though.) I wish the nearest Ikea wasn't 7 hours away. The baby in me wants a hedgehog toy for herself. I can't wait to show Clara Tales to the kids. And those jammies are fabulous. Not fair, UK folks, not fair...

    1. It's just as well those jammies are hard to get -- because I would wear them as real clothes.

  7. Each time I pop over here from France I see we have things in common. It is a joy to dip into your cool things list and yes, yes, yes; Toast is superb. I am now whispering this into your ear: 'I a placed a Toast order a few days ago and I am in hungry expectation of the delivery man's visit!'

And now I am rushing off to your previous post about Nigella's chocolate cookeies. I made some on Friday when my son's school organised an exhibition of the pupils' artwork in a stunning old property. The cookies were scrumptious.

    And breathe...

    1. No breathing here for me Miss Stephanie -- I am hyperventilating that you have an order coming from Toast!! Fortunate woman! I think a Nigella cookie will make everything all better though...:)
