Cool Stuff I Like

June 8, 2012

Juneuary is here. Do you know about Juneuary? Yes yes? No? See, it's this little weather phenomenon wherein the temps are somewhere in the FIFTY-FIVE DEGREE range and it rains a lot. And it's dreary. Oh so dreary. Just a few weeks before summer! Doesn't that just float your boat? Andrew keeps telling me how happy our plants and lawn are. I keep reminding him that, as far as I've always read in those book thingys, plants and veggies do quite well when it's a teensy bit sunny. Just a wild theory I've heard. Sounds crazy.

Cheery COOL STUFF is in order:

A pal pinned this article on how to delight your kids, which I just adored. Thanks Katy!

My friend Jenny is finishing up decorating her daughter's room. Isn't the room (and her kiddo!) lovely?

Thinking of trying this rose hip mask I read about at Whole Living.

Glamping! This is the way I want to experience the great outdoors.

Cool Book of the Week: I've been steadfastly ignoring the existence of 'Where the Sidewalk Ends' by Shel Silverstein for a good portion of my life. My thinking when I was younger went along the lines of, Poetry, ugh. Like, OK. I'm sure it's good and all but meh, I can't be bothered to check it out.

Until Andrew took out his copy and gave it to Julia! And she started reading it aloud to me! (Poetry really needs to be read OUT LOUD, I've discovered.) And she loooves it! There's a poem about a little monster who lives inside your nostril and he will bite your finger if you stick it up your nose. SO FUNNY.

Have a lovely weekend! (preferably a warm and not rainy one)
~Melissa

  1. Your warrior princess is adorable!

I wonder if Juneary is related to the horrible rainy season here? It started yesterday and I swear my leather shoes are already starting to mould. Yuck.

  2. Great post! If it makes you feel any better, it's been pouring down here in Florida for the last two weeks. I almost feel like I'm back in Britain, just need a sharp wind to go with it and I'll feel right back at home, take care, Sally xx

  4. Of course so much to say! Julia, adorable! Weather, I have been thinking boy, its a good thing there's global warming or it might be snowing out there! (that is a joke of course!) GLAMPING!! Yes! Love that! And the room redo-- is her blog named for a Charlie and Lola reference? Also-- all I see is that amazing paining and she didn't even mention it, did she paint that : o ( that's a gaping mouth, can you see it?). The painting is amazing! And now I need some raspberries and some chocolate, so thank you for that.

    1. Yes yes, Jenny's blog is named after the C&L catchphrase, that's what caught my eye about her blog when I first found it a couple years ago! The painting I believe is by a lovely artist named Michelle Armas, she has a website. Jenny also paints and does really gorgeous work, I have some of her stuff pinned on my Art Pinterest board.

      Glamping, yo!

  5. It's really too bad we can't somehow combine our two climates, Melissa. We're getting back into the 100 degree weather and all I want to do is hide in my air conditioned house.

I grew up loving Shel Silverstein, and we had a copy of one of his lesser known books, "Uncle Shelby's ABZ Book" (very wacky!). I read "The Giving Tree" to my daughter recently, and it made me cry! It's good to hear you're enjoying his poetry. :)

    1. sigh. I know I'd be complaining just as much if it were 100 degrees! Basically I love complaining about the weather, it's a fun hobby. :)

  6. I LOVE the face paint! Julia looks awesome.

I would so trade places with you. I love cold weather - winter is my favorite season - and I melt when it hits 80 degrees. (It will be in the 90s again here today.)

And now I want sugar buns.

  7. The Seattle weather has definitely changed over the years. Growing up we used to go to the beach the last day of school. Now summer doesn't start until after July 4. JC is leaving for India today and it is 100 degrees with 100% humidity. I think I'll take our rainy Seattle weather instead.

  8. Sorry for Juneuary! That sounds miserable. Hopefully, it passes soon. And now I want to go get Where the Sidewalk ends!!! Happy weekend! :) By the way, that fairy party was not Juliet's--it was one of her little friend's birthday party and it was magnificent. You would have loved it. Oh my. I can't even describe the cuteness of all the fairies and magic going on in that backyard. :)

    1. I finally figured that out about whose birthday it was, tee hee.

SO jealous you got to go to a fun fairy party! It sounds so darling! I've been trying to talk Julia into having a fairy party for me, I mean, for HER birthday :) for several years now....Might just have to have a fairy party for myself...

  9. We had Juneuary in Utah last year... it was the strangest June ever. I feel for you. So Shel Silverstein is the best. All of his books of poetry are hilarious. EVERYONE. And yes, they are best read aloud! Glad you've joined the Shel party. :) also love the pic of Julia and I want to eat a sugar bun right now, but instead I'll go to bed.
