A Package in the Mail

August 20, 2012

One of my dearest friends that I grew up with on Maui recently sent a care package of epic proportions -- the most wonderful box of treats arrived in the mail! Julia and I were literally dancing and yelling from excitement. In this age of online ordering and catalogs, there is nothing like the thrill of an unexpected surprise package or letter from an old and cherished friend.

What made the box extra special was the inclusion of some photos that my friend took of Julia and I during an excursion to a local tea shop -- from a visit three years ago! I had never seen the photos, so that pushed the mystery box o' awesome onto another level of fun.

Also included in the box was a darling Liberty-print inspired owl pillow, an enchanting crocheted garland (both of which came from my friend's recent trip to England), the aforementioned photos, the cutest Matryoshka doll card and lastly, a fun 'Rainbow Magic' series book entitled 'Leona the Unicorn Fairy'

(OH! Almost forgot that there was a Hello Kitty plushie wearing a watermelon dress but Sally chewed on her arm the other day and J is devastated and there's no picture of HK today and we must never speak of this again.)

Julia and I were in heaven. And it made us start plotting about who we can surprise with a fun care package sometime soon. Nothing better than old fashioned mail....something hand picked and hand written. I'm going to encourage Julia to try and find a regular pen pal!

(the pillow and garland are from a charming UK based company called Sass & Belle. The pillow we received is not available online, but there are dozens of other cute cushion options to see. My friend got her daughter a Russian doll garland, which is just divine! Our beautiful garland is called the Handmade Crochet Square bunting.)

  1. Ooooooh! Lucky, lucky you!

There really is nothing better than a care package in the mail. I love the pillow and garland. Are they going in Julia's room?

I had several pen pals when I was a girl and there was something so special about writing and receiving letters in the mail. My mom was really in tune with my love of letter writing and bought me an entire assortment of cute stationary papers (with matching envelopes, of course!).

Now I wish people wrote letters more often. It's such a wonderful way to communicate and I miss that sense of excitement I used to feel whenever I opened the mailbox.

yes Julia's room! the home for the pillow and the garland -- although actually when Fall hits in earnest, I might pilfer it to hang in the family room!
