Halloweeny Home Life

October 18, 2012

Fall time at our house. A time for cozy reading, snuggly sweaters, beautiful colors in the world outside, blahdy blah blah...and more sugar than is good for you.

Crimson, russet, burnt sienna, tawny, scarlet ~ you name the red hue, it's been on a leaf around here. I'll never get used the PURE FAB that is autumn leaf time. I blew Julia's mind the other day when I told her that when I was a little girl in Hawaii, there were no fall leaves that changed. She couldn't believe it! As amazingly fantastic as the weather is in Hawaii, I used to resent our warm, sunny, and green Christmases. I wanted snow. I wanted to be in England, strolling the moors. Now? I'd take a Hawaiian warm Christmas in a hot minute. Paradise is wasted on the young....

Anyhoo, we've got ourselves some Halloween decor, some blanket forts....AND SOME HELLO KITTY SPOOKY CHOCOLATE. That's not too exciting though. Because it's actually SUPER AMAZINGLY EXCITING!!

What else...oh since this post seems to be just me shilling for Hello Kitty and the Hawaiian tourism industry, let's pause a second and all take a Target appreciation moment. Julia lives and breathes her Harajuku Mini Halloween t-shirt. She looooves it! She liiiives in it! I waaaaash it a lot! And since I'm a huge sucker who will fall for anything cute placed in the checkout line, I saw the Frankenberry cereal there and thought oh how fun. She's into monsters right now. I'll get some.

Friends, it's gross. Like, it's not even good sugar cereal. Want to hear a story? I wasn't allowed sugary fun cereal when I was little. So when I went to college, I started at one end of the cereal aisle and mowed my way on down the rows, one box of sugar cereal at a time. Let that be a cautionary tale for you parents out there ~ deny all you like, but one day, your kids WILL get into the sugar cereals. (And they will also get into the Twinkies.)

But I am sad to report that the Frankenberry cereal was a disappointment. Andrew told me I should have gone for the Count Chocula. Lesson learned!

I feel like I've given very wise counsel of deep profundity today. Target is good. Frankenberry cereal is bad. The weather in Hawaii is Very Nice Indeed, although autumn leaves are Also Very Lovely. Everyone needs some Hello Kitty hot chocky. And perhaps also this:

AW YEAH.

  2. I totally understand your feeling for weather change. I still miss the snow now that I live further south and my Christmas are never the same anymore :(

I have this craving to eat chocolate and sugary cereal now thanks to you LOL

And oh yes Target is made of awesome. That store really ruins me. I try to not go there too often because I just can't help myself once I am in there!

    1. You know what's fun? Once I went at night, kiddo at home with daddy, and I just cruised up and down every single aisle. It was fantastic! I was there for almost 2 hrs. Just looking and cruising...:)

  3. My folks didn't give us sugar cereal when we were kids either. And Twinkies? Well, let's just say I had my first Twinkie when I was probably 8 or 9 years old... when my parents went on a tiny anniversary trip and my aunt came to stay with us. I clearly remember the moment when she realized we had never had one... we were out renting a movie when she said something about needing to pick up some Twinkies. My youngest brother said, "What's a Twinkie?" and I think she almost had a heart attack. LOL She was forever after known as "The Twinkie Lady" and it's been a long-standing family joke. :)

  4. I grew up on the sugary crap. And yes, Count Chocula is MUCH better. ;o)

I NEED Hello Kitty hot chocolate. That picture caught my eye immediately. My grandmother let Big Sis pick out a whole collection of Halloween shirts from Target for her birthday, along with skeleton tights. They're crazy. I don't know why I comment on blogs when I haven't had a chance to wake up yet. I have had to retype the last sentence four times because of typos. I shall stop now.

    1. One time I got really excited and commented on someone's blog first thing in the AM and made an only-funny-to-Melissa joke(questionable) and I'm still mentally flagellating myself for that one...my mouth often functions before my brain does....it's a fabulous trait, my mother, father and brother have it even worse than I do, I'm the best of the lot, ha ha!

  5. The part about sugary cereal cracked me up because my mom was the same way, and when I left home, I did the same thing...ate every sugar cereal in sight (I call it my "rebellion"). I was SO disappointed when I found out how disgustingly gross Trix and Fruity Pebbles are...I had waited so long to eat them, and then I couldn't even stomach them. :-)

    1. Yes, I was also very disappointed with a great many of them! Except Lucky Charms. LOVE Lucky Charms!

  6. Oh I was so worried when I saw the fraken berry! I was like please please please don't let her give that the jbb stamp of approval! We were sucked into that same cute spooky breakfast trap last year...so disgusting! Never again!

PS- went to cost plus. Holy sensory overload! I clearly had no idea what to expect! Left with happy hippos, italian soda, crunchy biscoff spread (I love those cookies) and other foodish stuff. Had to use some serious self control not to leave with an adorable new hat and sweet stackable mugs in a metal holder. Oh and hello awesome lamps!

    2. UPDATE: I just told my husband Andrew that some people appreciate my 'humor' and he said my writing style is "like a 10 year old on a massive sugar high"

Now please excuse me while I go kick him in the ankles....(He really is a sweetheart....and he's way funnier than I am, by a MILE:)

  9. HA! I love it all. I got to eat sugary cereal as a kid... but have never tried frankenberry... and now I never will. :) I'm afraid Count Chocula wouldn't do it for me either tho... with my not liking chocolate thing. Not that it matters...

LOVE all the PIX... coziness and fall colors and awesomeness all around! Hooray!

    2. grr. I can't write straight. Just saying love the cat in the sink and that I have a cat post (has nothing to do with books) coming up sometime soon. Not sure Whit will approve but I'm thinking you'll like it! ;)

  10. I wasn't allowed to have spaghettios as a kid and lets just say, I ate a lot in college....so, yeah. Bad parenting move to deprive kids of bad food. :) Also, I'm jealous that your cat sits in a sink! I used to have fun looking at a site called catsinsinks.com and wished my cats would sit in the sink so I could take a picture of them!

    1. Yep, I had to explore Spaghettios at one point as well -- Trader Joe's has their own version...Julia doesn't care for it much but I LOVE it. Catsinsinks.com?? I have got to go check that out ASAP!
