Cool Stuff I Like

Oh gracious what a week. DOWNTON SEASON 3 SPOILER ahead: I know a lot of folks were shocked/horrified/chagrined about the ending of 'Downton'. NOT ME.  OH HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY! I won't have to cringe anymore during the Matthew/Mary scenes. I've been griping about their total lack of chemistry often and loudly since last year. I'm so DELIGHTED at this turn of events. I asked a friend, Do you think Dan Stevens is gunning to be the heir to Hugh Grant's throne? I have this sneaking suspicion that he is! I think he's made a seriously bad career move and is greatly overestimating the strength of his appeal. Were you a Matthew lover or hater?  Shall we discuss this further in the comments? Oh ~ the best part of the finale? CARSON HOLDING BABY SYBIL!!!!!!!!!! omg that was the cutest thing ever.

You know, everyone complained about this season but I thought it was just grand. If you're feeling low, you must read this and this.

COOL STUFF that Julia received from friends/family for her birthday!

Personalized name birthday candles.

Super adorable fuzzy monster magnetic page clips.

Fashion Headbands kit.

Fifties Shirt Dress.

Nightttime Fairies: A Bedtime Shadow book.

Hello Kitty Big City Dreams (yes, this came from me and Andrew)

This robot necklace in pink.

Candles that have colored flame. (cuz you needed to see more candles)

Cool Book of the Week: 'I'll Be You and You Be Me' by Ruth Krauss and Maurice Sendak. Not sure how best to describe this one. Childhood, wrapped up neatly between the covers of this charming book. Short stories, poems, silly drawings, nonsense rhymes, even a play ("The Doll in Pink"), with teeny tiny wee mini-sized drawings by the Grand Master himself, Mr. Sendak. I bought it, even knowing Julia was getting too old for it (it's perfectly perfect for preschoolers!) because it was simply too beautiful not to have. Any book that says "I think I'll grow up to be a bunny before I grow up to be a lady" is a must-have, in my opinion.

Have a lovely weekend! My friends with tons of snow ~ have snow fun on my behalf! Friends who are warm ~ be warm for me! I'm trying to get some materials together to show you about Girl's Day, which is a Japanese holiday for little girls, celebrated on March 3.

  1. Those are all great gifts! I am totally in love with the pretty 50s shirt dress! Julia will look so beautiful in it!

The book by Krauss and Sendack is so freaking cute! :D

And now you got me excited for that Girl's day post! Can't wait to read it!

    1. My brother gave her the dress and also got a grey cardi with pale yellow polkadots, (not Mini Boden), and it goes perfectly with the dress. Easter outfit, done! :)

  2. That headband set is VERY popular in our house. :) And that Boden dress is adorable (as they all are), but I have a dress-hating daughter. Boo. I guess it cramps her cartwheeling style.

I'm with you--Matthew/Mary was tiresome. I hope Mary has something interesting to do next season.

    1. That headband set is THE BEST. A friend gave it to J, and I think I just found my next go-to birthday gift for little girls! I'm hoping I can get her to get good wear of the dress! She seemed to like it a lot, but she wears leggings and a top 99.9% of the time. :)

I really hope for better things for Mary next season, b/c her storyline totally went downhill this past yr.....

    1. I'm right there with you, I would wear that in a heartbeat! I often prefer the Mini Boden outfits to the Boden outfits, sigh....

  4. Love the dress and the Nighttime Fairies book looks very cool. I tried to interest the girls in a headband set, but they weren't having it. I thought the method of killing off Matthew, just as another baby is born, was kind of dumb. Downton Abbey Rule: New Baby = Dead Parent. And I love I'll Be You and You Be Me. I tend to like Ruth Krauss/Maurice Sendak collaborations in general.

    1. Julia is all about the headband. sometimes two at a time. ???????????????

I read an interview with Julian Fellowes, and he said he wanted this last ep to be happy and fun pretty much, and he didn't want to dwell with a bunch of funeral stuff next season, so he thought he would just tack it on to the last few minutes of the show and then next season, time will pick up 6 months later so we didn't have to deal with a bunch of mourning stuff.

It was so jarring ridiculous though, if I hadn't already known, I would have been VERY surprised.

    2. My husband kept saying it was about to happen, because Lord Grantham finally praised Matthew about his handling of Downton, and there were other too-happy moments. He thought it would happen in Scotland, though, while hunting or something.

    3. that would have been HILARIOUS! I'm so twisted :

    4. I knew it was coming too and I was waiting for a hunting accident, train derailment, poisoning mishap from a disgruntled servant, all episode. He was really boring and unappealing so I am happy about it too!

  5. Gah! I'm a fan of Matthew, less so of Mary this season- she's so...cold. Unfortunately I'd heard a spoiler so I was just kind of waiting on it. Not like Lady Sybil, whose death totally blindsided me and left me a crying mess of a lump on the couch. I also figured it would be a hunting accident.

That Maurice Sendak book looks perfect!

    1. I had NO CLUE about Sybil, that was a total surprise. Ditto the crying mess on the couch.

Oh don't get me wrong, I pretty much hate Mary as well. I can't believe these two were/are the leads of the show. I love everyone else! Except Lord G. I want to kick him in the head most of the time. But at least his stupidity is fun to watch. :)

  6. I'm annoyed they did another kill-off-a-main-character-on-the-day-they-become-a-parent shtick. Lame. I've never heard of Girls Day, sounds cool!

  7. I'm so glad to know that I'm not the only one who was happy/relieved to see the end of Matthew at last. When Mary told him that she she was only half herself without him, I was nauseated- those two were terrible! Mary is so snarky to Edith too- I joked to my husband that I wished she'd have been in the car with him. :-D
