Is My Friend the Worst Cook in America?

The excitement at my house right now. You have no idea. One of our dearest friends is a contestant on the newest season of  'Worst Cooks in America', airing on the Food Network this Sunday, February 17!

Please meet my friend, Aadip Desai.

How best to share the persona that is Aadip? Well, he's been described thusly:

"Aadip Desai is a Los Angeles based new dad, sideburns enthusiast, comedy writer, producer/co-host of the On The Page screenwriting podcast, and drummer for The Spanglers, a comedy musical act. His work has appeared in City Arts Magazine, Geekweek, Los Angeles Or Bust, and at aadip.com. His produced work includes an award-winning romantic short, a Get Out The South Asian Vote PSA, and a math rock music video. He has performed at The Improv, The Comedy Store, Upright Citizens Brigade, Steve Allen Theater, and the SF Sketchfest. Aadip lives in Los Angeles with his universally adored wife, his sassy newborn daughter, and two reactive Malteses. He melts when animals who are natural enemies become friends, enjoys a good TV slap fight, and marvels at the plethora of items that can be stuffed into a pizza crust." ~ via The Conversation with Amanda de Cadenet.

Not sure what's happened to him here in that promo shot up above for the show, but normally he looks a little more like this photo below. Here's Aadip with his daughter, baby Ruby, aka THE CUTEST BABY WHO HAS EVER LIVED. Pretty much every day of our lives, Julia and I squeal and shriek over the adorableness of this baby on Facebook.

I love Aadip. He's the funniest, most charming person I've ever met. He's also pretty directly involved in Andrew and I going out on our first date, since he's the guy who gave my telephone number to Andrew.  (Andrew was a little shy. Asking for my number outright might have given him a seizure from which he might never have recovered.) I asked Andrew how many years he and Aadip were housemates, and he couldn't quite recall. "Like, a million. I can't really remember because a lot of that time was spent playing 'Starcraft'."

For a time after college, Andrew, and his twin brother, and Aadip, and their other best friend were all unemployed and they played video games morning, noon, and night. They refer to that fleeting period as "The Golden Age."

(small digression: I asked Andrew "was 'Starcraft' really that fun of a game?" His response: "let's pretend you didn't just ask that.")

Aadip is also an amazingly talented writer, musician, and comedian. He can do anything! Except cook, apparently.

When I first saw one of the promo clips, it wasn't a bizarre experience at all, seeing my friend on television. It was like, 'Oh yes. There's Aadip. OF COURSE he's on TV!' It was like I had been seeing him on TV for ages, because his real personality is so larger than life, entertaining, and witty.

So I'm not at all surprised that he's going to be on this program. Nor was I surprised to see his writing work turn up on Amanda de Cadenet's website, The Conversation ~ you can see the essays on parenting he did right here and also here. They're fabulous.

You can also find Aadip at his own site, Aadip.com, on Twitter @aadip, and PINTEREST, yo! That should keep you busy getting acquainted with him until you catch him on 'Worst Cooks in America', this Feb 17!

  6. Over the years I've tried to separate myself as much as possible from Food Network (am I the only person on the planet who doesn't like the Pioneer Woman? Anyway...) but that lady with the crazy hair looks kinda fun. How exciting to watch someone you actually know on tv! I knew a girl on one season of Road Rules on MTV--it was not a flattering portrayal. Hopefully, Food Network is nicer to the people on its shows!
