Homelife

A collection of pictures taken from the last month. Please don't think that we wake up every day, have our fresh squeezed OJ, and then trip-trap, tra-la-la our way around in bows and scarves and sniff the orchids all day long. Oh and then a batch of cookies magically appears. That would be delightful but that is not what happens.

This is what happens: The OJ appeared during Julia's illness, Andrew and I were desperately trying to avoid contracting what she had. Also, I'm still trying to prevent the scurvy. Do you remember me swearing a few weeks ago that I thought I was getting scurvy? I got low on Vit C for awhile and my gums got all inflamed. Really bad! It felt like I had burned my mouth all the time! I kept asking Andrew, what is going on? I practice good tooth hygiene! I started getting some flipping vitamin C again and my gums instantly improved. Julia refused to drink the fresh juice ~ 'too pulpy'. Why does OJ from the orange taste so different from what you buy at the store? What's done to it in processing that makes it taste so inferior to the real deal?

Also, I wish I had a juicer.

I had exactly one decent non-frizzed out hair day in the past month and on that day I also wasn't too splotchy or rashy, so I took my picture. Yay? And can we all congratulate me on my cool ability to take my own picture without it really looking like I did? That's kind of amazing right? Like, where's my arm? It's hiding!

Want to know how I think I do it? I HAVE VERY LONG ARMS LIKE A MONKEY.

The cookies are from heck knows when, but I photograph all of my food now in case I ever want to use the pix. So sometime last February I made some cookies and here they are. If you want some cookies too, well here you go.

Unlike moi, Julia is cute every single day, and for some unknown reason, likes to wear a headband...around her neck. And she likes for her hair to be tucked into the headband, while it's around her neck. Andrew and I were talking about this the other day, her total fearless and bizarre fashion sense. If I put her hair back in a single ponytail, she disappears into the bathroom and will emerge with one hunk of hair pulled out on one side. She says 'it just fell out', but no, she goes and pulls it out. She thinks she looks fabulous.

Our dining room table is now officially The Activity Table. When Julia was sick, we just kept piling more and more stuff on top of it. You can see Julia's 'measuring tapes' that she made on the bottom right corner of the table. Also the $ that I paid her for them. She made out like a bandit, she got $2 or something. DO YOU THINK WE ENJOY PINK IN OUR HOUSE? Yes, yes we do.

So on a handful of days, I photographed some things that were better to look at than the five piles of laundry on my bedroom floor and my bathroom countertop that has not been cleaned since maybe Christmas? I'll start cleaning again when it stops being so grey and nasty and cold. Oh, but maybe that will never stop. WELL THEN MAYBE I WON'T CLEAN AGAIN!

(update: we've since had 2 days of beautiful sun. I had to clean.)

I seem to have a created a little monkey shrine on my kitchen window. Grandma got Julia this little stone monkey that she's been wanting "for all of my life." But I had to explain to her that it's STONE, not a toy, and that we had to put it up somewhere, NOT in her room because that place has turned into a Tiny Junkshop of Pink Terror and NOT ONE MORE figurine is going up in there. Also, I can totally imagine some kid throwing it at another kid while playing in Julia's room and then I get sued.

There are periods when I devote a lot of time imagining ways in which I might get sued, or in which I might sue someone else. There are days when I wonder why I'm not still a practicing lawyer? And then I remember BECAUSE I WOULD HAVE A STROKE OR A HEART ATTACK AND DIE of stress, that's why.

  1. Miss Julia looks so smiley and happy...love it! And I know all about some frizzy hair. My hair totally goes into shock in the summer...it's so humid here on the east coast. I do have say that you have the most beautiful orchid I think I have ever seen!

    1. Thanks Julia! I'm even happier with this orchid b/c I got it crazy on sale at a nursery :) I have another orchid that just bloomed itself out and I call it my mutant superhuman orchid ~ I got it at Trader Joe's for under $10 and it has re-bloomed for me 4 times!!! They live in my kitchen window and I guess they are happy there. I certainly don't take care of them in any special way, I just water every 9 days or so. I love orchids!

  2. Melissa, you are so AWESOME! I love that you show a bunch of beautiful photos (you're the only person I know who can make a cluttered table look glamorous!)... and then tell us the reality behind them. I love that you are so real and that you manage to crack me up nearly every post. :)

    1. Filters! Photo filters make things look nicer and more glowy than they are! yep.

the day I discuss my fiber and prune intake, you'll know we're getting really real around here. DID I JUST DISCUSS MY FIBER AND PRUNE INTAKE?

  3. Hahaha! Courtrooms scare me. I don't ever want to sue or be sued. This picture of you is so pretty!!! Julia's headband is cracking me up. I didn't notice it until you pointed it out. My table is smaller and 10 times more cluttered than yours. It's embarrassing. We just finished GS cookie sales, so I hope to restore my house to its usual state of pretend orderliness. Fresh-squeezed OJ is awesome. We have a Jack Lelanne juicer (from my dad), but it's so impossible to clean that we haven't used it in ages and ages. I'm sure there's something growing in there. Beautiful orchid photo! Those cookies look so good. After we're through our GS boxes, I can't wait to make homemade cookies again!

    1. thank you darling D, yeah that's funny with the headband, isn't it? see how it's all tucked in? hilarious! she likes to do bizarre things with her bangs too and then ask me, does this look nice Mommy? and i'm like, uhhhh, that's a very interesting and unique hairstyle you've got there.

pretend orderliness. i like that so much! that's what my house is. i cleaned my bathroom the other day and almost passed out. there's this weird thing under our shower door, this plastic flap and it gets so nasty, i don't understand how.

    2. also, I was never the kind of attorney who went to court! I did document review mostly, where you sit in front of computer with a team of other lawyers, looking for pertinent documents that could maybe serve as trial exhibits. very very boring. but it paid pretty well and wasn't too stressful. i'd go back to it except that it's full time or no time, and I want to be home some of the time with Julia. :)

  4. Miss J looks super cute and happy despite her illness. Bless her little heart!

That's really an amazing self-portrait... mines come out totally skewed or shaky or just darn too big.

I enjoy looking at your photos; they are pretty without an ounce of pretention! Your orchids are superb. I wished I had orchids and cookies right now with me! :P

    1. Cherie you are so kind, what a lovely thing to say. I do like pretty, as much as I dislike pretension. there are so many wonderful orchid varieties out there but I tend to stick with basic phalaenopsis, because they are the most hardy and hardest to mess up. :)

  5. Relieved to hear that I'm not the only person who doesn't always have their house looking like the cleaning fairies came for a visit...

  6. You are both totally cute! :D And I'm glad to hear Julia is feeling better-- I had a sick little one this past week too and it's no fun (especially when you're trying to care for them but not get their germs!) I love her cute little haircut the bow just makes it! Two adorable ladies :)

Plus...for some odd reason I've been watching a lot of HGTV lately and there's a show about Hawaii and I always think of you :)

    1. She is doing so much better! although her nose is still really clogged, so now I'm wondering: did the sinus infection not fully clear? did she catch some new mini-cold? or have spring allergies begun? I'm worried that the sinus infection hasn't fully cleared. she's going to LOVE another trip to the pediatrician....NOT.

my whole family is in Hawaii right now. my dad still lives there. my mom and step dad and brother are visiting. except me! SO SAD.

  7. I had fresh squeezed orange juice the other day for the first time in a looong time, I'd totally forgotten how it's way more awesome than storebought stuff. Note to self: Must get orange juice squeezer.

Your pictures are all so sunny and bright, I'd never believe you were in the Pacific Northwest if you didn't point that out. Seriously. Every one is a framer!

    1. thanks Amelie!!! because we have so much grey and so much low light much of the time, I have to brighten brighten brighten most of my pix and I increase the warmth almost as high as it can go in my photo editing program. :)

  8. I think I remember reading somewhere that orange juice that you buy (as opposed to squeeze yourself) is just MADE from oranges--but not actually the juice of oranges. I don't remember all of the details, but it made me sad that I wasn't actually drinking orange juice. So I quit buying it. Julia does have a wonderful sense of fashion--I love it! Hooray for sunshine--I"m glad you are finally getting some!

    1. Andrew mentioned something about that too! Ick. No wonder then. If they're throwing in the whole kit and kaboodle, with the pith and whatnot, which is very bitter, well that explains a lot. Also, I can't normally drink a lot of commercial Oj b/c it's too acidic for my tummy. But I can handle fresh OJ just fine!

    2. I'd never heard that! I did want to pass on a little homemade OJ tip... Normally I like pulpy orange juice but when I make it using oranges from our tree it comes out way to pulpy (even though we have a juicer that filters out some of the bigger pulp). The last time I made OJ I simply strained the juice through a sieve and it was perfectly drinkable.

    3. I need a sieve, I don't have one! Or some cheesecloth. So silly, my sieves got all rusty and I never replaced them. doh.

  9. Beautiful pictures! I love these glimpses into your home life minus the piles of dirty laundry and dirty bathrooms (since I got those things in abundance to look at around here). I was at my sis-in laws last weekend. She also has gorgeous orchids... I'm thinking I need to get myself an orchid. I need some of that on my kitchen window sill. For a minute when I clicked on this post I thought Julia had gotten a hair cut... nope, just a tuck. ;) And your hair is getting long! Very pretty.

    1. thank you Robyn!! best to focus the camera on the flowers eh? and not the piles of cleaning and messes. I've found my orchids to be really low maintenance. when they aren't flowering, they make for nice greenery, i keep watering just the same and then like magic, new stalks grow with new blooms! I think they like being in a window.

Julia and I are both on a long hair growing kick. we'll see how long that lasts before i get tired of it and hack it all off, which I've been doing in an endless cycle for the past 20 yrs....:)
