Camping and Caravans. OH YEAH.

OH FRIENDS. I have a new obsession. Well, not so new really, but I'm super into the idea of...camping. Not just regular camping, because that sounds dusty and buggy and it scares me. Too much nature scares me. I'm not a big believer in roughing it. I like the idea of GLAMPING, which my husband thinks is the most hideous and/or ridiculous word ever. I think glamping basically means, camping done fancier. I got the newest Sunset magazine (which I totally adore, which means I am totally an elderly person now), and I was convinced that the universe was giving me a SIGN.

Ok. First, did you see how they did the BED? Those are like, REAL SHEETS, yo! Did you see those cinnamon rolls? Apparently you make them at home, slice them and freeze them, and then you take them with you and cook them in your little pan! Isn't that AWESOME??

Also, I would like my tent setting to come complete with a rainbow and a squirrel, like in the photo.

Here's how to make a cozy bed:

I want a cozy camping bed!

So, we have a tent, that thus far, we've only used in the backyard. (And it was not the greatest sleep experience.) I need an air mattress. But this summer, we're determined to take this entire endeavor onto the road and do actual camping in an actual place, other than our yard. I'm just a teensy bit afraid.

My big big BIG dream though, seriously this is is a serious FOR REAL dream that I TOTALLY WANT SOME DAY, is to have a camper or a caravan. Like these bobbins:

Basically, I kind of want a cute little playhouse on wheels. Also, I would like a roulotte. Not sure what that is? It's THIS. I want one to live in my backyard. And I would sit in it and BE HAPPY FOREVER.

Do you want to see my Camping and Caravans Pinterest Board???? I'm just getting rolling with it but there's some fun stuff there.

  1. Yes! I was just telling my husband when we were at the bookstore the other day that I want to Glamp too!

We've dreamed of owning a vintage airstream for yearrrs. One day! Oh yes, one day we will!

  2. I am sharing your love for glamping! Never did camping in my life and being out there in the elements scares me as well. I like my comfort so camping has never appealed to me. But make it sweet and comfy and I'll come :)

The caravans are so nice! I hope you'll get your own one day Melissa!!!

    1. I hope so too! I wouldn't mind a cabin either. Cabins are fun. I used to go summer camping in one with my aunt and cousins. I think I'm just not into the tent thing...:)

  3. I grew up reading Sunset magazine! My folks had a subscription... maybe that's why I'm so old fashioned. I was an old person back when I was a kid! LOL

As to camping... I grew up camping but do not enjoy it as an adult. I like the fireside marshmallows, the day hikes, the relaxing in nature part. I do not like sleeping in a tent. I always end up cold and sore, no matter how many blankets I pile on or how fluffy the air mattress.

Looking at those adorable caravans and the roulotte... now that's some camping I can get behind! We should all get roulottes and meet up for a camp out! ;)

    1. I was an old person when I was a kid too, Michelle. I had paper dolls in Edwardian dresses, I kid you not. I was like a little old English lady even when I was teeny tiny!

I like those things you just described. It's the sleeping part. I have to figure out a more comfy sleeping thing b/c when we slept in our backyard last summer.....oh the misery. I wasn't on any kind of proper air mattress tho, just this 2 inch pallet thingy.

      Isn't the roulotte AMAZING??

  4. I'm going on the record saying CAMPING IS TOO MUCH WORK! (Kinda like vacations are too much work... but at least if you're staying in a hotel housekeeping cleans up after you) haha, really I like camping every once in a while... but it's just SO hard to get everything you need all packed up and be prepared for the actual camping and then the clean up and put away when you get home is just the worst. the worst. They do make it look all magical here... Sheets would get so disgusting, just saying. You know what i miss most when camping? Bathrooms with shower/bath facilities.

    1. Oh ack. Now I'm scared again. Oh dear. This is why I want a trailer or a caravan. Did you see the interior of that one with the fancy pillows?? Did you see? SO awesome! I wonder how much it costs to rent a trailer. In California, you can rent the Airstreams, but I don't think you can in my area. Haven't looked into it fully though.

I'm now officially afraid of the Tent. hee

Yeah, the bathroom situation....I found one campsite that apparently is all nice and near a cafe and some lodge and it was $55 per night. My husband was like, for a campsite??? But if it's super nice, I'd pay that!

Maybe I need to start investigating cabin rentals.....:)

    2. Ha! Yeah, staying in a cabin would be fun! Trapper's family has a condo up at a beautiful amazing lake about 2 hours north of us... I like that kind of camping. (it's not camping)

oh, and fighting over campsites and campsite reservations... that's a whole other ball of wax. It shouldn't be so difficult to go enjoy nature for a day or two! haha

  5. I love to camp, but it's been a while. I'd be very happy just to have a decent tent. I would love an old-fashioned vintage camper-trailer, too, though. And yes, I would decorate it to the hilt!

  7. Those look so fun! I love the idea of camping, but I have never found a good air mattress, and I sleep with a fan for white noise...are there battery-powered fans, I wonder? Sunset looks fabulous- is it mainly for people who live in the western part of the US?

  8. I think it mostly is Miss Jenny ~ also Hawaii :). But there are fabulous recipes and gardening tips and whatnot. Is it even sold in the Eastern part of the U.S., I wonder? Now I'm curious :)

  9. I am for glamping as well! Regular camping is way too buggy and ax murder-y for me. I think I need to subscribe to sunset....and coastal living while I'm at it...

    1. ha ha ha ha! ax murder-y! this is why I won't be going to any forests or whatnot. I don't know....until i get my hands on a trailer of some sort, we might just stick to the backyard....:)

  10. I don't know what you're talking about- Sunset is totally a respectable magazine. :) And camping- before kids we were all "let's pack only the most light weight tent and sleeping bags since we're hoofing it for a week, we can shave down our toothbrushes to save that quarter ounce. I'll bring one extra set of underpants and we'll just eat freeze dried whatever." Now with kids we're like, "screw it- we're renting a campervan and bringing the cooler and wine. I might even pack extra shoes since I'm not CARRYING them!" Yeah, man, it's AMAZING! Camping with sheets- BRILLIANT!

  13. You make camping look like a terribly glamorous affair!

I'll tell you something, camping in a camp site is horrible! Other stinky campers being gross and stuff just yards from you - NO!

If you can camp somewhere peaceful and quiet and with all the cool bits in the magazine above then I am definitely up for it!

    1. Ok, I'm getting a very strong message from everyone that regular camping might Not Be Awesome. I think maybe I need to hold out for either a trailer or a cabin! :)
