This book is neato! It has titles like 'The Kettle That Would Not Walk' and 'The Straw Ox'. It's got fairy tales, folk tales, animal tales, tales for littles, tales for slightly bigger kids. If you're wanting an old fashioned collection to read with your kids and be cozy altogether, this one is your man. Or your book. HA HA HA HA. Yeah! We're having THAT sort of day! Don't you love those?
Fabulous, no?
"Hold your tongue, woman," said the hedgehog. "This is my affair."
LOVE IT.
Every few stories or so, there are these amazing glossy, color picture pages, and they look different to me than Lenski's work in her 'Small' books, more richly detailed. Not to GEEK OUT too terribly much, but I just go crazy for anything Lois did. She illustrated my beloved 'Betsy-Tacy' books. (We will be having a convo about those very soon, I promise. (and I promise never ever to use the term "convo" again.) And this is what it'll look like: Have you read 'Betsy-Tacy'??? AAAAAAAAAGH, I LOVE THOSE BOOKS SO MUCH. Yep. That's what that post will look like, prepare yourself.
In the meantime, go see if you can find 'Fireside Stories'. And read 'Mother Hulda'. Have you read that one? I love that fairy tale.
Do old fashioned books like this make you feel kind of light headed and woozy? Just me? Does it make you want to bake a pie? A pandowdy? No? COME ON, it totally does. Yes?

It totally does make me want to bake! I dont think I have ever met Betsy. Must change that immediately.
ReplyDeleteYOU WILL LOVE BETSY-TACY LIKE YOU HAVE NEVER LOVED ANYTHING IN YOUR LIFE. (or you know, something along those lines...:)
DeleteI love this one! And that line from the hedgehog is priceless!! :) Old fashioned books are my absolute favorite. I'm convinced, you know, that I was born in the wrong era so this one is right up my alley.
ReplyDeleteso funny right? i love the un-PC-ness of vintage books sometimes. Last night my husband and the kiddo read 'Mother Hulda' from the book :)
DeleteWhat an adorable book! And the illustrations are darling! You find the nicest books!
ReplyDeletePandowdy? LOL at the term but absolutely fitting :D
The word Pandowdy is so great, but I like "grunt" and "slumps" even better. (Those are also fruit cobbler-ish type of desserts :)
DeleteI adore vintage books. They make me feel nostalgic.
ReplyDeleteme too, me too! :)
DeleteOh, this looks wonderful! I must check out more Lenski. I finally got my Easter book from the library. Of course, now it's a month and a half after Easter...
ReplyDeleteStill need to read the Betsy-Tacy books!
hee hee, holidays are often a fluid thing in our house as well....:)
DeleteYou have photographed the book so beautifully Melissa, I almost want to check it out of the library myself.
ReplyDeleteThanks Hamilton! Hey there's no shame in reading kid books, I do it all the time. :)
DeleteThat is a fabulous book- I love Lois Lenski too! Have you read her historical fiction chapter books? I bought "Houseboat Girl" for myself for my birthday. Lois Lenski's style reminds me of Virginia Lee Burton, another of my favorites. Have you seen Life Story? The illustrations are phenomenal.
ReplyDeleteHouseboat Girl? Oh I need me that one! Yes I agree, Burton's and Lenski's art is very much reminiscent of each other...and both so utterly charming! Thanks for the tips, I'll go seek out Life Story asap....
DeleteI just love these illustrations x
ReplyDeleteThanks Rebecca! So glad you stopped by and said hello :). I think illustrations like these, and Lenski's work in particular, just brings to mind a different world.....
