Cool Stuff I Like

Well, this is it. Summer vacation is ending. I'm ready, and the kiddo is really ready! You can consider this my end of summer Cool Stuff post, even though we have a few more weeks of summer technically left. I feel like I'm entering a new chapter of my life, or at least I hope I am, before I get too old and/or too near sighted. I've been actively working on a portfolio of photography work, and I have my first paid family portrait sessions (plural!) next month! This fall I'm going be in a tech immersion process, and I'm hoping to have a website solely devoted to photography up later in the fall or by holiday time. I hope that the act of writing this down makes it really come into being. I've heard that nothing kills a passion more than turning it into a business, but I think I would feel like a jerk when I'm 80 if I didn't even try.

COOL STUFF this week:

Super adore these Halloween paper chains. Yes, this might be the earliest I've ever talked about Halloween. I'm surprised I lasted this long.

Kinda happy in a way that I don't have a smartphone.

This rug looks like a gingerbread cookie.

Yes yes yes. I can see so many Land of Nod things in a family room setting!

Pretty sure my kiddo needs this kitty cat shirt.

HACK, COUGH, SPLUTTER. Cannot handle this much cuteness! AAAAAAAGH.

Apparently I should become a food blogger. My peach cobbler post is going crazy on Pinterest. (which is not crazy for some, but crazy for me and my bloggy!)

New J.D. Salinger books??

A back-to-school meal plan.

What a darling idea ~ a fairytale storytelling basket.

Cool Book of the Week: Well I can't resist many cookbooks and good-looking cookbooks for kids make me pause and take a good look.  To be honest, I've yet to find the Holy Grail of Awesome Cookbooks for Kids yet, but I'm always looking. 'The Kids Only Cookbook' by Sue Quinn looks promising and there's recipes for sticky toffee pudding in a jar, fairy bread, chocolate & banana french toast, dreamy chicken curry and confetti energy balls. It sounds fun!
Have a lovely weekend! This week has been a cram-the-rest-of-summer-fun-in. 3 sleepovers. Two picnics. One birthday. Visiting relatives. I'm ready for a long winter's nap.

  1. Congrats on your new project/website! I am excited for you and I wish you to become very successful with your new venture!

I was just wondering when you would be posting about Halloween! Ha! The story telling basket is a beautiful toy! And I wished I could redo my living room like The Land of Nod!

  2. Go you with the photography!!

Thanks for the link to the kitty shirt. Pretty sure I will have to run out and buy it ASAP. Every new school year calls for a new cat shirt.

Lately I've been slightly tempted by the idea of a smartphone, but I'm going to stand strong. I'm home, I have internet, and it's easier on my eyes to read North & South fanfic on my laptop than a teeny phone screen, right?

  3. Ooooh, I'm so excited for you! I'm guessing that you're going to love your new business venture - and from what I've seen so far you'll be quite good at it too! Just remember that you control how many hours you put into it, so if you start to feel too stressed or that you're not enjoying it anymore you can always cut back some. xoxo

    1. Thank you sweet Darcy! This was taken while 'camping' and the house we were staying at has this huge giant picture window in their living room with a window seat, sooooooo cool :)

  5. Congrats on the photo stuff! Love the Halloween garland. That article spells out why I held out so long on getting (a very cheap) smart phone for so long. However, while on vacation last year, I began to wish I had a way to look up maps and locations. When my old phone was stolen with my purse, it turned out to be less to upgrade than I'd imagined, although I still got a cheap one with very little storage. I can't really add any apps or games to it besides Instagram. I got to see Hank Finds An Egg in person earlier this week! It is so adorable. Hooray for peach cobbler! Love the fairy tale basket. Happy Weekend!

  6. I have pinned or planned to buy almost all the things you mentioned for Harper! The cat shirt is AWESOME! Though it will be 2 more months before it's chilly enough to wear. Not complaining, just impatient for her to wear it!!

Thanks for all the hot tips!

  7. Melissa, what is a tech immersion that you are doing this fall? Are you actually taking classes? The picture of Julia is gorgeous and looks like something from the 50s/60s. Love, love, love it!

    1. My dad is a semi pro photog ~ (semi only b/c he makes more $ from his day job. he's been repeatedly asked to turn pro and has an exhibition coming up in one of the big hotels on Maui this fall!) anyway he's sent me mountains of workshop materials, dvd series, and other random assorted miscellany. I've never had the gumption to sift through it all before!

so glad you like the pic!!

    2. Once that's all done, I'd love to take more classes. There's a food styling workshop coming this fall taught by the blogger behind Cannelle et Vanille, a wonderful food blog. She lives in Seattle now and is periodically offering classes! I'd love to take one.

And I'd love to keep joining in as the 2nd shooter at weddings. (wedding photography is kinda crazy and i'm not sure i'm cut out for it....:)

  8. Oh, very exciting about the direction your photography is taking! That's sort of how I felt when I decided to turn my blogging into a more series undertaking - scared but also I felt lame about being scared, lol. Looking forward to hearing about how it goes!
