Cool Stuff I Like

November 1, 2013

Happy Friday! So. How was it? Did you have a fabulous Halloween? Julia loooooved her day. School party, lasagna dinner (her favorite), and for trick or treating we...ventured beyond our neighborhood onto another street. She and her pals were impressed with themselves. I was not impressed with myself because I wore my boots and my boots are not good trekking around boots. My mom brought over her puppy and he pooped on our floor. I just feel like I will mention that A LOT because it was very traumatic for me. Guess what! It's not October any more! That's weird, doesn't October seem kind of endless? I'm excited to be done with Halloween though, I have many many other things that I want to talk about. Like dragons, Little House on the Prairie and Moomins. So be on the lookout for that. Also be on the lookout for my new photo website, because guess what, it's pretty much done and it was like going through childbirth all over again getting that thing organized, I tell you. I'll share the link next week, if I can ever stop tinkering with it.

COOL STUFF to me this week:

Spiced Buttermilk Cake with Pears.

Pumpkin Spice Rice Krispie Treats.

20 of the Most Beautiful Children's Books in the World.

This is such a cute idea!

Have you ever heard the whole soundtrack from 'Nightmare Before Christmas'? It's really so incredibly awesome.

A whole website devoted to cuteness.

Hello, my name is Melissa and I've already bought an advent calendar.

Did you know these existed? Guess what. They're IN MY HOUSE.

Cool Book of the Week: 'The Goldfinch' by Donna Tartt. OMG I am so so excited for this. Did you guys ever read 'The Secret History'?? It's one of my all-time favorite books. And this one......people are comparing it to Dickens in its scope and 'Great Expectations'-esque vibe. It's supposed to be FABulous. My BFF Amazon says: "The Goldfinch is more than a 700-plus page turner about a tragic loss: it’s also a globe-spanning mystery about a painting that has gone missing, an examination of friendship, and a rumination on the nature of art and appearances." I don't really care what it's about, I'm just so excited that Donna Tartt is writing again!

Have a lovely weekend! We'll be here chillaxing (I promise never to write that word here again) and coming down off of all the candy. You know, I'm not even tempted by all of this candy. But the Trader Joe's mini pumpkin pies in my freezer? THOSE are calling my name....they are wonderful, you should go buy some and help me feel better about buying so many pumpkin products.

~Melissa

    1. I think I will ask for it for Christmas. And then spend all of frosty January reading it!

  2. Loved the book list at Apartment Therapy. Isn't Cute Overload crazy? I should probably share it with the girls. Cute Advent calendar! I love Christmas, but I need my three weeks of holidaylessness. The paintable softies project is cute, too! Lots of cute. I need a thesaurus. Still haven't tried pumpkin pie PopTarts. Those footless tights look soft. I own a pair of weird adult footless tights. I just needed something pink or red for a play, and I wore them with boots the one time and that is it. I have still never read The Secret History. I heard some wonderful reviews of the new book on NPR. I need to read more grown-up books. Glad you had a great Halloween! xoxo

    1. I need a thesaurus to tell me other variations on 'awesome' and 'charming & delightful'. Well, I tried the pumpkin pop tart today. I was slightly underwhelmed. I liked the special edition Hot Chocolate flavor that was out last year much better!

    1. tee hee. i am the wrong person to ask about shoes. I wear them until they fall off of my feet in shreds. I hate shoe shopping, I'm very ungirly in that way. my mom and I wear the same size so I usually go along with holes in my shoes until she buys me another pair. yes I am an adult and my mommy buys me my shoes still.....:)

    2. Oh I'm gonna cry-- my giant rambly comment just disappeared...that's what I get for going on and on pointlessly.

So, hi, long time no chat on the jbb comment feed!! Wassup??? Footless tights, that's what! I'm obsessed with some footless tights my kids have-- they are fleeced lined and they look so cozy and I really really want some!!

Also have you eaten the peanut butter pop tarts? They taste like peanut butter cookies!! I really like them-- pop tarts-- that I really like-- that's kind of an embarrassing sentence. I'll have to try these pumpkin ones-- but one of the good things about the pb ones is no frosting...

Now then, let me get serious-- the apartment therapy list, very lovely indeed, but are those 20 of the most beautiful books in your opinion...I mean what would be on your list? I'd really love to know :)

    3. i want fleece lined footless tights!! just got J some fleece lined jeans. i want those too!! i keep hearing about those Peanut Butter pop tarts, I've gotta get on that.....just biding my time until the Hot Chocolate flavor comes back for Christmas....

well now that is an EXCELLENT question about the picture books. One I might have to devote a post too. Or we could do that together on our respective blogs! And see if we have any overlap! Wouldn't that be fun?

    4. 'devote a post TO', not 'too'. Doh.
