Tasha Tudor's Night Before Christmas

December 10, 2013

Prepare yourself, I'm going to be shouty today. Oh Tasha. What is it about her art?? I've really devoted some time to thinking about it. I think part of what makes her so amazing is that each page she ever created in a book looks like a wholly realized painting. EACH page. Each frame. Each vignette. EVERY detail is meticulous and perfect.

Everything she does looks like it was created in an enchanted land that doesn't exist anymore.

Is it any surprise that her version of 'The Night Before Christmas' is ABSOLUTELY PERFECT? I feel as passionate about her version as I do about Gyo Fujikawa's version of the book. YOU SHOULD OWN THEM BOTH. YOU SHOULD GIVE ONE AS A GIFT. DO YOU OWN AT LEAST ONE OF THEM??

~end of ranting & raving~

Corgis!!! I love corgis too, not just because Tasha did. I think they're really cool dogs and my mom used to have one and she was the bestest dog ever.

LOOK AT THE SUGARPLUMS DANCING IN THE HEADS!!!!!!!!!!

In Tasha's version, Santa is tiny little elf. HE'S A CUTIE PIE.

Ok what can I say about a 'Night Before Christmas' that features the northern lights as Santa flies off into the night? FANFLIPPINGTASTIC.

I love Tasha! I love her love her love her! I was going to profile a cool chapter book she wrote, called 'Becky's Christmas' but the library hasn't ponied it up yet and it's expensive to buy. So I'm contenting myself with this lovely and that's more than ok. SO beautiful!

  1. Okay, this is a different Tasha Tudor Night Before Christmas than the one I checked out from the library this year. (I understand she did three?) I haven't illustrations of the one from the '60s, but the one from 1975 had rather dark illustrations, and like the Holly Hobbie one I posted about today, the illustrations were smaller. There was a lot more white page. I like this one better!

While looking this up, I found this ebay listing! Coolness: http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/291025363056?lpid=82

    1. This year? I meant last year. I even posted a picture on the blog on Christmas Eve, but didn't bother showing off the pictures, because they didn't really photograph well!

  3. I own the 1975 version...I've had it since I was a little girl. There's a double page spread with the Christmas tree and all the presents, and I could examine it for the longest time. And yes! The sugarplums! (Though in my book, the children are actually in their beds.) I'm going right now to pull it off my son's bookshelf and bring it to the family room.
