1/52 ~ The 52 Project - 2014

January 5, 2014

(a portrait of my daughter, once a week, every week, in 2014)

Julia: reading 'The Doll People', which she has not put down since she began reading it a few days ago. seeing her so engrossed in her reading is pretty much the greatest thing ever!

Have any of you heard of this photography project? The gist is that you take a portrait photo of your kid or kids, once a week for every week of the year, with a little descriptive caption for the photo that week. I first became aware of it via Jodi's blog. Bleubird blog also did it last year.

I think it's a really lovely series, and at the end of it, you can take those 52 photos and make a book of them for your family. And you're left with a consistent photographic journey of your child's growth during that year. I really really enjoyed this feature on the other blogs I just mentioned; they were some of my favorite features on those sites last year. Something about it really appealed to me ~ seeing a weekly snippet of a child's life, I just loooooooved the whole idea!

So that's my longwinded way of saying I'm going to do it as well. I asked Julia beforehand, I told her that it would be something we would be doing together once a week for the entire year. She listened very seriously and then stuck out her hand for me to shake.

I'm curious to experiment with light, perspective and other creative photography techniques, while also preserving a photographic time capsule of my child's year. I read a great quote the other day somewhere, about how you as a parent will always possess the ability, no matter your skill level, to take amazing photos of your own children.....because no one knows your kids the way that you do. I'm hoping to discover a lot more Project 52 photos this year!

  1. Some of the people I follow in Instagram do this and as you said, it is one of the loveliest features of their feeds. The photos are always so beautiful, even (or perhaps especially) when they capture the most mundane and everyday moments. Just very special. This is a gorgeous photo - you've inspired me to give this a try.

    1. I never ever tire of pictures of everyday life. I think maybe in an alternate reality, I was a street photographer :) ~ I would love LOVE to see your photos if you give it a whirl as well, Ness! I know some 2013 people joined in, even in the 2nd or 3rd week into the year, it's not too late at all!

  4. What a beautiful photo!!

Over the holidays we dug out and watched some videos from when The Princess was littler and oh, my, how she has grown. You don't notice it as much when it is happening before your eyes but looking back....I need to take more photos.
