Cool Stuff I Like

January 17, 2014

Happy Friday, or as I like to call it, almost my birthday!! I like to celebrate myself a lot, so birthdays are an especially happy time for me. :) You know what was NOT a happy time for me? Watching 'Downton' earlier in the week. Excuse me while I swear. %$#@!#%. REALLY? They had to go there? Of course they had to go there. I understand that the powers-that-be felt the need to go there, (look what happened with Sybil and Matthew for heaven's sake) but that doesn't mean that I have to like it. I had to cover my face and I think I may have gasped. The only silver lining is that I guess this type of storyline will give Bates & Anna more to do than all that time when he was in jail, which was SUPER DUPER boring.

COOL STUFF this week:

Did you see this post? Blend the banana smoothie recipe ingredients together and you get what you see in my top photo.

I read Sini's ENTIRE BLOG. That has happened to me only twice before in my life with blogging. And I pinned nearly all of it! A food blog inspired by seasonal Nordic food. I think I've gone to food blog heaven!

Vaseline rosy lip color! (I know, petroleum bad blah blah. I'm still excited!)

More spaghetti I like.

I like this list so very very much.

Look what you can capture in 90 seconds! I want to try this.

Love this room full of books.

Bedroom fairy light ideas.

I've NEVER seen a book like this! Incredible.

A love garland. And a cute heart garland!

INCREDIBLE. Just.....amazing.

Making this soup asap.

Cool Book of the Week: Well, every kid I know is passing around Rainbow Loom bracelets and yep, Julia got one for Christmas and guess who's obsessed with it. Me, that's who. But I need help. I need instruction. I've found very many helpful YouTube tutorials and I also came across this 'Loom Magic!' book, which might prevent my brain from exploding while I pull on those teeny tiny rubber band strands.....

Have a lovely weekend! I'll be making birthday cake, and I told Julia that what I want for my birthday is for the weather to cooperate so I can dress her up and plunk her in a field for a fairytale photo of 'The Firebird' that I want to do.....in the meantime I'm working on some 'Red Riding Hood' photos, which hopefully will turn out decently.

XOXO!

~Melissa

    1. Thank you Miss Julia!!!!!!!!!! I'm telling you, that's a really great recipe. I've made it before and it turned out great. The frosting is fabulous, kind of chocolate marshmallowy with a nice lightness to it that's better than a regular buttercream.

  2. I bawled after last week's episode of Downton Abbey. My boyfriend was in the other room sitting on his chair at his desk. I came in, crawled onto his lap, and just sobbed. He was a little bewildered, but God love him, he let me get all the feels out!

    1. Get all the feels out!!!! THAT'S MY NEW FAVORITE PHRASE. My husband and I think that now she's going to wind up preggo......

  3. That room is gorgeous, even if I feel that giving up incandescent bulbs is a worthy sacrifice. ;)

We have an 11-yr-old birthday this weekend (WHERE DID MY BABY GO?!?), and I am making Boston Cream Pie. Mmmm....pastry cream.

And in the lip balm arena, I just discovered Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm (I think mine is Red Dahlia) and I am IN LOVE. Not too shiny, not too much color--just enough so I don't have frightening, pale and pasty lips.

    Have a lovely birthday!

    1. Have I seen this Burt's Bees???? Now I'm wondering. I have their tinted chapstick in Pomegranate, have you seen that? I also like Neutrogena's tinted lip balm that comes in a chaptick-y container. My favorite thing is tinted lip balms, if you can't tell :)

I have never made Boston Cream Pie. Andrew likes it, one of the few cakes he likes! I should give it an attempt someday!

  4. I like that Resolutions list too. As much as I love blogging, pinterest and my internet connection, I think it's good to be disconnected too because life is meant to be lived :) Which is why I rarely check my computer during the weekend. You are starting to make me look at the Loom Magic stuff! I thought I would never ever be interested but it's slowly creeping into my mind! Enjoy your weekend and your birthday Melissa :D

    1. Thank you sweet Cherie -- you would like Rainbow Loom, I'm telling you, but it makes you concentrate really really hard and frown a lot, or at least it does for me, heh :)

  6. Those photos are AMAZING. I want to live at that woman's farm. And I want her to teach me how to photograph my children properly (a nice camera would be a bonus, LOL). :)

    1. well that lady does have an amazing camera and a fabulous lens, but she also has some major SKILZ -- I've been looking at those pix everyday since they came out. I wish she would make a coffee table book or a children's book!!!! Wouldn't that be awesome??? Using the giant dog!

  7. I think Mr. B was more upset about Downton than I was. And I was pretty upset. I drooled over My Blue and White Kitchen, too. So happy Vanilla Bean posted that link on FB! That 90 second challenge was awesome! I wish our piles of books could look artful, but her beautiful desk and floral patterns help so much. Ours just look like clutter. I wish we had more wallspace, because I love the fairy light idea. I loved the Chess Dream in a Garden post. The Russian animal post!!! Eeeek!!!! LOVE!!!! All the garland stuff is pretty. I may try that soup with veggie broth. It looks goooood. Happy Birthday tomorrow! Have you found a solution for watching Flowers in the Attic yet?

    1. I knew it was going to happen b/c I can't stay off the internet and I had read a spoiler. I'm actually glad I did b/c it might have been too much for me to be blindsided with that scene.

Have NOT found a way to watch my trashy Lifetime movie! Gah! Sometimes I really miss cable!

Man I agree with that gal on bulbs. I love the warm light they give off. *le sigh*

    Adorable garland.

  10. Happy, Happy Early Birthday!!! I am a prolonged birthday celebrator too. One day just isn't enough. Especially when cake is involved.

I love your links, especially the Russian photography blog. I want to BE one of those children in the photos. Their life looks so very enchanted. Amazing what photography can do:)

Thanks for putting in the link to Chess Dream!! It pretty much knocked my socks off the first time I read it too, in a delicious mashup of Alice in Wonderland meets Narnia-ish kind of way. I wish the creators had collaborated more, but maybe it is a once in a lifetime kinda deal.

    1. i knew it was coming and I had to put my shirt over my face. so awful. not as bad as Sybil dying though. I was pretty much unhinged and gasping for breath and sobbing during that whole thing. not sure these programs are good for my blood pressure! (and yet i will still watch....) :)

  12. Happy Birthday!!! Hooray for Birthdays!!!

All I want is more bookshelves in my house... that room!!! And yeah, I did not see that coming with Anna. I probably should have, but I didn't. yikes.

I've been out of it for a while... now I'm back tracking to see what I've missed over the past week or so here. xoxox
