Best 8 Year Old Birthday Ever!!!

February 25, 2014

So, we went to DISNEYLAND for J's 8th birthday and guess what! It was awesome! Are we all on board for lots of !!!!! and ALL CAPS?   ??????

Also, Andrew and I are intending on retiring to Disneyland's Main Street. That's allowed right? Either that, or we'll just become squatters there. Julia has announced her intention of getting a Disney character job there in the future, which I AM TOTALLY 100% thinking is the best career plan ever. Did you know that Patrick Swayze was 'Prince Charming' in Disney on Parade? THAT'S SO COOL.

Andrew took this awesome pic! (this is not Disneyland.)

When you wear this birthday button, EVERYONE at Disneyland says Happy Birthday to you! (It looks like I superimposed J's head to her body in this pic but no, just a weird camera angle.)

Here's who we saw in Disneyland: EVERYONE.

We saw someone we knew or were friends with everyday that we were there. Two of J's bestest BFF's were also there at the same time. My pal that I grew up with on Hawaii was there with her kiddo and they came down to spend an afternoon with us. My neighbors were there. Random people I hadn't seen in years were there. IT WAS CRAZY.

Last time we went to Disney, J was four and a half. That trip was all about the princesses. This trip was all about the RIDES. My kid likes roller coasters, turns out, like, A LOT. She rode Space Mountain twice, and this terrifying roller coaster that goes 65 miles per hour twice, and would have been happy to ride them all day basically. I rode Space Mountain last time we went, and I did it again this trip, and you know what? NEVER AGAIN.

Every time I ride that ride, the whole time, I'm just like ohpleasedon'tletmedie, and then I feel sick for an hour afterwards, and it's just not worth it. The Peter Pan ride? I would ride that one all day long, if I could.

That glittery Minnie Mouse ear headband J's sporting? That was not a passing fancy, my friends, she wore it every day. She's still wearing it, pretty much only taking it off for sleeping. That's commitment. Also, BEIGNETS. Omg. Not sure if they can beat malasadas made in Hawaii (a very similar beast), but I would be happy to judge that competition any day of the week.

New Orleans Square was all decorated for Mardi Gras! So cool. My mom's family comes from Louisiana and I went to real Mardi Gras when I was 9. I'm thinking it has only become less clothed in the intervening years.

Oh friends! If you go, you must see if you can go to this show, Mickey's Magical Map! It was FABULOUS, like a mini Broadway show. And free! We loooooooooooved it.

(deciding whether or not to have a chocolate-cherry-soda or not is Serious Biz. she got the soda.)

Small World ride was closed for renovation. I was devastated.

(see this roller coaster up above? my kid rode it. twice. i wouldn't put one pinky toe on it. i felt nauseous just looking at the thing.)

Andrew has a pedometer and he figures we were walking about 5 miles a day. One day for him, as he was running back and forth trying to get fast passes, he walked about 8 miles. He and I were going to sleep at like, 9:30pm. OH SO TIRED. But I would go back tomorrow if I could. You know what I miss the most? THE SMELL. Disneyland has the best smell!!! Like doughnuts and popcorn.

  2. Oh, I so want to go to Disney someday. Never went as a kid, and I still haven't been. (Mr. B has been to Tokyo Disney. That's something.) Your pictures are fabulous. I have friends who have played characters at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Dance training is a must, by the way...

    1. actually it's not us who are the awesome parents (well we are.....ha ha) but it's grammy and stepgrandpa who are even more awesome b/c they took us! babies trump Disney tho, b/c of Wonderful Baby Smell. I told Andrew the other day that I miss diaper smell and he thought I was insane. Not poopy diaper smell, just diaper smell! I love it.
