Pantry Meals

You guys know that in my innermost heart, I'm a food blogger right?? You know what stuff of mine gets passed around on Pinterest? Mostly the food. Oh and that pic of Julia reading Harry Potter. But I couldn't handle a full time food blogger gig because they have to cook everything early in the day to get good light and also if you have a rustic chic kitchen, that kinda works to your advantage as well. Also, if you can make stuff that looks like this plus plus plus.

I think I'll keep on just incorporating recipes that I like into this space, here and there. I love my food posts way more than my book posts usually because food is awesome. So are books, which is why I will continue to cover BOTH.

But here's a thing, which should be a thing, if it's not already. Pantry Meals. (not to be confused with PANTS MEALS, according to Andrew.) Last week it was 6:10 and I realized that I had totally screwed up a frozen dinner.

HOW DOES ONE MESS UP A FROZEN DINNER???

By not taking it out to defrost 2 hrs ahead, like the directions said.

So it was 6:15pm and Andrew was like, Do I need to go out and get something and I was like, no no no the house is full of food producing things, I should be able to produce something.

So I moved onto Frozen Dinner #2. Trader Joe's gyozas. Friends, you really need these in your life, if they aren't already. You can get frozen potstickers or gyoza at pretty much any grocery store, but I've had some pork-filled dumplings from the grocery store that made me feel really ill. I don't feel sick to my stomach from the Trader Joe's variety and hurray for no gastro distress!

Also, do you have a rice cooker? Yes you can cook rice in a big pot. But I LOVE my little rice cooker. You just rinse your rice (because of ALL THE ARSENIC) and put it in and click the little button thingy. I LOVE THE LITTLE CLICK SOUND. And then it turns itself off. And then I turn it back on, because I mess up the water levels and it needs more time. But......I loooooooooove my rice cooker. We eat a  lot of rice with our meals because Andrew hates potatoes and too much pasta wreaks havoc on my bowels.

How did this post go so horribly awry???

Anyway, you should always have some gyozas in your freezer. And rice (NOT long grain). We had our dumplings and rice with stir fried asparagus. And that's a good dinner.

*I have a teensy little rice cooker. It cooks about 3 cups of cooked rice. I love it and have had it for 15 years, I think my dad sent it to me. I'd love something bigger though! Someone mentioned in the comments that rice cookers are a pain to clean. I always soak my insert overnight and then scrub out the residue, the stuck-on rice just falls away -- and then put I it in the dishwasher. That works pretty well with a minimum of effort, always my preferred mode of operation....)

  1. I looove TJ's gyozas! And white rice, which we cook on the stove top. I used to have a rice cooker, but it was big and unwieldy. And a pain in the rear to clean. Maybe one of those little ones would be better? Oh well, love these food posts! :)

    1. my little one is awesome and frustrating! it's too small for more than 3 people. I really need a new bigger one but I don't want one that cooks 20 cups of rice!

  3. We are completely without a Trader Joe's. I had a rice cooker, never used it, and gave it away. Mr. B made some yummy veggie fried rice last night, though. How can someone not love potatoes??? I mean, it would be better for me not to like potatoes as much as I do, I admit. :)

  5. I tried other brand of gyozas but never from Trader Joe's yet! Your photos are awesome. Makes me want to eat every single time! I think being a food blogger is a good thing. You make me want to cook and not just eat junk food when I feel lazy. Oh I love my rice cooker too! I think it's the easiest thing to clean among all my dishware. Don't throw away your old rice cooker btw. The old ones are the best!
