My Summer Book Stack

July 7, 2014

Hello my friends! Remember my summer reading list? (edited by the always helpful Andrew) Well I thought you might like to see what I'm actually reading right now. Because........because I thought you would.

Well if you remember from my list, I was quite keen to try and get my hands on 'Black Lake' and I did, the library had it. Haven't read it yet but it's next after I finish up what I consider THE BIG WINNER from this stack o' books, 'The Magicians' by Lev Grossman.

That one gets a big WOW. Ok, here's my reading story, it's super fascinating: I started first with 'The Elite', which is the sequel to 'The Selection' and I'm very excited to read 'The One', because if it's one thing I love, it's my YA fiction. This trilogy is basically that show 'The Bachelor' in a royal setting in a dystopian society. I think the book blurb on the back actually says "it's 'The Bachelor' meets 'The Hunger Games' (minus the blood sport)." Very fun, good fluff. (But whyyyyyyyyyy does she cryyyyyyyyyy ALL the time????? And whhyyyyyyyy is it so hard for this girl to make her decision about which boy she likes??? so that there will be 3 books!)

Then I read half of 'The White Princess' by Philippa Gregory and it's about Elizabeth of York and her marriage to Henry VII and it was pretty ok. I read about half of it and wasn't super hooked. I read the end. So then I started 'The Splendour Falls' by Susanna Kearsley and I like it, but then I read the end (i'm naughty, i need to stop doing this) and I was like, okay I'm not thrilled enough to keep on right now. (i like it, it's just that 'THE MAGICIANS' arrived on my hold list at the library and I had to start on that right away. i have book ADHD.) I'll get back to it after I finish 'The Magicians'.

OK 'THE MAGICIANS'. First, if you are easily offended or weirded out, don't read this book, because it's weird and violent. I LOOOOOOOOOOOVE IT. THIS was the book I was hoping to find during summer reading season! In a nutshell.....'Harry Potter' with sex, drugs, violence, and death on a crash course with 'Less Than Zero'. It's a VERY messed up version of 'Narnia'! I've been hanging on every word and I can't WAIT to read the sequel.

Haven't read 'The Pursuit of Mary Bennet' yet, but duh, anything that might remotely involve Darcy-esque romance is going in the plus column for me.

So what are you reading? What what what? Has anyone else read 'The Magicians'? It's a trip, right??

  1. I love your description of your reading habits. I never used to leave a book unfinished, but now I figure life is too short to waste time on bad books. Oh, and I must get my hands on 'The Pursuit of Mary Bennet'!

    1. I used to ALWAYS finish books -- now I'm hardcore....if I don't LOVE it, or if it's not fun enough....bye bye. My attention span has shrunk to the size of a wee gnat. :)

  2. I've considered getting The Magicians, but now I think I must! I'm waiting for a copy of The One to come back into the library. All these teenagers have them checked out now... Sheesh.

    2. Then, while at the library, I found "The Here and Now" by the same YA author that gave us the traveling pants (haven't read those though). Very short, quick enjoyable read.
