Cool Stuff I Like

August 8, 2014

Happy Friday! Oh how I love me some hydrangeas. They are the perfect plant, require little attention, do well in the shade, the blooms last for flipping EVER and I just super loooooooove them. How are all you lovelies? I'll be honest ~ I'm ready for fall. I'm not quite ready to give up summer, but I'm good and ready for Indian Summer. Mostly what I'm ready for is for the twice-a-week back-and-forth swim lessons to cease. I'm really ready for that to be ALL DONE.

Many cool things for us to delight over this week:

Inside Out Peanut Butter and Nutella Banana S'mores. (i'll stop posting s'mores recipes when summer is over. then I'll start spamming you with all pumpkin all the time.)

This looks like an amazing tomato tart for summer.

Really cute book list of jungle stories.

A gorgeous Domino game -- you've got to see this!

Look at this amazing beauty of a fairy tale book.

Shared kiddo rooms.

Well HELLO darling blog all about tea and with Asian-inspired recipes to boot.

Every year I talk about Halloween a little earlier. Next year I'm thinking I'll start after Easter?

Charming food blog I saw the other day.

I've come full circle right back to my Laura Ashley obsession. I want to live in this room.

Cool Book of the Week: I saw 'The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast' by  Alan Aldridge and William Plomer mentioned on Mothermag the other day and I was like, HOW have I not SEEN this before? Have you all seen this? It's been around since the early 70's but has been recently reissued, and the art is glorious. I'm just in awe. Aldridge created his works in the 1960's and is well known for his album covers and posters. Although younger kids will appreciate the vivid art, the text is actually better suited for older children. I can tell you right now, this is coming to live in our house.

Have a lovely weekend! We're goldfish babysitting. Julia has some major thrilled-ness over this prospect. Oh and friends in Hawaii, I very much hope you do not get too much soaking and wildness from Hurricanes Iselle and Julio headed over there! Be safe!

    1. long long ago, I was an exchange student in France, in high school, and my french mother made the most amazing tomato tart I've ever had. nothing else has ever been the same, but i keep pinning recipes, hoping someday I'll find something comparable!

  2. Did you ever hear about the Laura Ashley Romantic Heroine Exhibition? Check it out: http://blog.lauraashley.com/at-home/laura-ashley-the-romantic-heroine-exhibition/. All those vintage dresses are amazing!

I love all of those shared kids rooms. I'm always looking for some good inspiration for boy/girl rooms, since my two older ones share and we'll be tossing Little Miss C. into the mix soon enough. I've told the kids it's going to be "The Party Room." I think it will be fun for them to all be together at night for a few years. :)

    1. NO I had not heard of that!!! Oh my! I feel faint with happiness at the prospect, thank you!!!!

The Party Room! LOVE IT. That will be so fun for them!!! I think that sounds pretty much like the cutest thing ever. I was scared senseless of the dark when I was young. How I would have loved sharing a room with 2 other sibs!!!

  3. Did you see the macaron ice cream sandwiches at Thirsty for Tea??? So cool! And amid the shared kiddo rooms, did you see the funny donkey picture? That looks like something I would do, just to be weird. That galette looks amazing. I want that Halloween book for the girls.

And now you must go see this, as it is what I think of when I think of The Butterfly Ball (thanks, Pinwheel). (Sorry, I tried to make a hyperlink, but it wasn't working for me. You'll have to copy and paste.)

  5. Ooh! I was just thinking about a tomato tart this morning. Deelish.

So, I think I have a black thumb because my hydrangeas are dead on my patio. Thank goodness I'm good with kids and food or I'd feel like I have no domesticity in me!

    1. man oh man, that's one of the only plants I can keep alive, and by keep alive, I mean, I can neglect it like I do every other plant in my yard, and it won't die. I don't really garden. I water every once in a blue moon and that's it. I have a total black thumb! I used to think I had to be some Mater Gardening person b/c everyone else in my family is, but I realized, hey I don't and I'm totally cool with that :)

  6. Crazy, but I'm ready for fall too! Our weather is so yucky here in the southeast during the entire summer - lots of heat, rain, and horrible humidity. I just want to be outside, and it be comfortable so I can enjoy it. My husband and I are seriously talking about relocating to the PNW some day. Are the winters really that bad? And do the summers make up for it?

    1. Julia! I'm happy to talk about the PNW anytime you like! If you need to chat more, email me anytime :) ~ my husband is a native, and I just asked him what he thought ~ his quote was "well, it's pretty miserable." ha ha ha! but then i asked him if the summers make up for it, and he said "ABSOLUTELY" ~ he (and I) would also say that the autumns make up for it as well. He likes to go for walks in the winter more so than the summer "b/c you don't get all sweaty". For me, the main prob is the lack of light in the winter, esp January. I squeak thru ok in Nov and Dec (holiday time!) and then once January hits, ugh. So much grey! If I had a gazillion dollars, I'd spend all of January in Hawaii, ha! But that grey biz aside.....I really do like it here a lot!

  7. The food blogs you linked are so beautiful. I am going to make myself some tea after I type this btw. Can't resist doing it after seeing a nice cup filled with tea! Laura Ashley's rooms look awesome! Such pretty design! Did you know there are such a thing as Laura Ashley's dollhouse? I kid you not! I got two of her dollhouse units. Need to blog about it one day.

  8. I love the shared bedroom link! My two (boy and girl, 6 and 4) share a room now by choice, even though we finally have a 3 bedroom house. I especially love the apartment therapy photo with the personal shelving behind the beds. Very cool!
