The Julia's Bookbag List of Christmas Awesome

December 3, 2014

Happy Christmas time!! Here we go! My big big list of holiday gift ideas! This took a long time! (I accept $10's and $20's. Or a mental high five.)

Saw this Labyrinth game, and it looks super fun! Ravensburger makes great games. I'm always on the lookout for fun and interesting games in the hopes that we can really get family game night off the ground. We've fallen off our 'game' game, ha ha get it? But we all still love it when we have a rousing game of something that enables us to yell at each other and accuse one another of cheating. Pictionary has been a big favorite lately.

Tired of Rainbow Loom?  How about these American Girl Daisy Design Bracelets?

For the kid who loves Harry Potter, magic, and secret scribblings - a fancy journal with a gryphon on it - or any kind of cool notebook that elevates itself past the everyday.

I may, or may not, have had the awesomest brainstorm of the century when I came across this Fuji Instax Mini Camera and suggested it to this grandfather I know. In case, he was stuck on gift ideas. They come in black, blue, yellow, white, and pink! Also, duty demands that I also mention that Hello Kitty film exists.

For the 10 or 11 year old girl in your life, this new edition of 'Anne of Green Gables' is drop dead gorgeous. GORGEOUS. You should totally get all of them, or the first 3 books, to make a gift set.

Is your kid into all things spy related, like mine seems to be? I really don't know anything about kid spy gear, but this spy kit looks fun. As does this secret agent activity book.

Oh Anthro. You have such pretty things. Like this puzzle from Djeco (LOVE Djeco anything!).

You know what's a great gift? That will keep going from age 3 until age almost 9? (I totally speak from experience.) PLAY FOOD. The gift that keeps on going, and going, and going.......

Saw 'This is the World' at the Anthro site, but it's nearly $10 more than what it's going for on Amazon. OH ANTHRO. Cough. This is so cool, I didn't know there was a single book that put together abridged versions of the famous M. Sasek travel books for kids into one volume!

Last year, Julia received this lap harp, and it's been hugely popular with her and anyone else who walks into the house. Plus, even if a kid doesn't really know how to play it very well, it still sounds pretty! Musical gifts are always A Fun Thing, but sometimes the noise they produce is Not A Fun Thing. But a harp always sounds great!

SOOOOOOOOOO. Hope this gives you some holiday inspiration! If you know something I don't know, but should know, well for goodness sakes, don't be a holiday information hoarder. Share! Share so we can all lift ourselves up and out of the holiday panic pit!

Oh - one more thing. If you have a girl between the ages of 6 and 11. The Justice site. Omg, so tacky. So garish. So......anything that comes from it will DELIGHT your little girl.

  1. We love our Instax cameras! And the fun film is cool, but since it gets expensive, you can also buy Instax stickers! That way you can still decorate the frame. I wish they'd had the cool colors a couple years ago when the girls got theirs. Ours are plain white, with either a pink or aqua border. That pink one is pretty! And I'm adding the lap harp to someone's wish list right now. :) And that puzzle is so pretty...

    1. explaining the finite allotment of film packs should be...interesting. still, fun fun fun! i neglected to mention the accessory pack. there's an accessory bundle that comes with a carrying case, and fun little frames and other random stuff. I wish I could get one of the fancier Poloroids for myself! There's one, but it's pricy, like $200 + and you can preview the pick before it's printed. cool!

    1. last spring, as a reward for having a perfect behavior record at school, I got Julia a similar looking notebook - she picked it out at the bookstore and she loooooves it - she writes many secret and magical things in it supposedly....I'm not allowed to see!

  4. I LOVE this. I have some girls in this age rage that I'm sorta stumped on.

    I LOVE the camera.

I must confess, I'm always afraid to buy kids I don't really know books. What if they like adventure and I give them something to slow? But then again, you hopefully can't go wrong with a classic right?

    1. You know what? I think it was on last yr's list - in a case like that, when you don't know what kind of books they like - I think you can't go wrong with a kids almanac - National Geographic Kids makes one every year and they are SO MUCH FUN - all kinds of cool and neat and interesting facts, not boring at all - Julia got one last yr and she LOVES it - there's so many things to look at with amazing pictures!

  5. Harper already has five or six of the M. Saset travel books. She learned early how to say "gelato" and "gondola"! Can't wait till we can take her to all the places in the books! I'm a sucker for a travel book and man, I love going to the travel bookstore here in LA. There used to be two near me, but now only one. Also a sucker for a good journal!

  6. I didn't know there was a compilation of the This Is The World! Thanks for the heads up, I just bought a copy as a Christmas present to myself!

I envy everyone buying for younger kids-gets much harder and more expensive when they are 20 ;)

    1. i like plastic play food - or felt. NOT wood! wood is pretty, but way too heavy and clunky :)

    2. I agree with wood play food. Talking of felt, I bought for my daughter a felt sandwich play food set from Melissa and Doug. It's a hit! Her older cousins also love to play with it and invent new sandwiches!
