The Snow Queen

December 1, 2014

HAPPY DECEMBER!!!!! Let's get this party started! There are all the other holidays, and then there's Christmas. I've got SUCH a treat for you today. I was in my Happy Place a couple weeks ago, aka Cost Plus World Market, and I saw that they had a couple of fantastic looking pop-up books, and when I got a close peek at this version of 'The Snow Queen' by Yevgeniya Yeretskaya, I knew there was no way I was leaving this beauty in the store.

I was worried that it would be too young for Julia (age 8), but no no no. There's a LOT of text, and in fact, I would suggest this only for kids 7 and up, to really get full enjoyment of the book.

WELL PICKLE. I realized as I was writing this that I neglected to get a shot of the very last page, that shows the entire front of the Snow Queen's castle. You're going to have to trust me that it's flat out amazing, as is every page in the book. There are parts of the story that you have to read by opening envelopes and pulling out pop-up pages.

IT'S INCREDIBLE. I'm telling you.

The art is just beautiful, I've honestly never seen such a gorgeous pop-up book before. This is NOT a book to hand to your toddler! The cutouts are so intricate and so detailed.....this is so giftworthy, my friends. Really, really special. I'm giving it to Julia as her first Advent present.

If there's anyone out there unfamiliar with 'The Snow Queen' tale, well naughty naughty on you! It's one of my favorite fairy tales. Kai and Gerda, best friends, are ripped apart after Kai's heart is pierced with a shard of a magic mirror created by an evil goblin. His inability to feel makes him ripe for the picking by the Snow Queen, who carries him off to her icy lair. Gerda travels across the world to save him, and eventually melts the icy mirror shards with her hot tears.

Please don't make the mistake of thinking all pop-ups are babyish. Julia is going to flip. her. LID. when she sees this! I know I flipped mine when I first saw it.

  3. Oh my jamocha! I think I just fell in love with this book. I was going to check the prize on Amazon, but then I saw Darcy's comment which made me sad. I may have to start a December-long hunt for it, because I would have soooo much fun reading this one to my kids.

    1. I got mine at Cost Plus, don't know if you have one in your area? I know, Amazon is out of a few things I was looking for. I had to add myself to the 'we'll ship when it becomes available' list, which is not fun for those who DON'T WANT TO WAIT (me) :)
