maurice sendak's nutshell library

March 11, 2015

I wish, OH HOW I WISH I had bought the 'Nutshell Library' when Julia was a tiny tot. I didn't. I bought it just a few months ago, just because I needed to have it. I did check out a few of the stories in this most delightful of collections from the library when Julia was small, and we used to watch the Scholastic Chicken Soup with Rice video all the time. (such a good song!!!)

I'm showing it to you now at this particular time, because 1) i love it so and 2) it's so wee! so charmingly mini! and JUST RIGHT for Easter baskets. Seriously, I'm obsessed with this idea now. Please someone, put this in an Easter basket, or tell a friend or relative to do it, and then please let me know that you did, and I'll be so happy, you have no idea.

As you can see, there are four adorable little books in this collection: the classic 'Chicken Soup with Rice', 'Pierre', 'One Was Johnny' and 'Alligators All Around'. All by the master, Maurice Sendak.

These books teach about the months, about numbers, and about ABC's, via Sendak's rhyming verse and illustrations. And one ('Pierre') even teaches you what happens when you are Very Naughty (you get eaten by a lion! don't worry, it all turns out ok. Pierre pops back out of the lion.)

Do you know the 'Chicken Soup with Rice' song? I'm sure most of you reading my blog know the song. It's such a great song. Excuse me while I go cry a little because it reminds me of when Julia was three.

'Pierre' (I keep harping on that one, ha ha!) labels itself a 'cautionary tale' and I consider this post today a cautionary tale of my own - don't wait to own this amazing little set. If you have a toddler or young preschooler living in your home, BY GUM GO GET THIS SET. (and please put it in their Easter basket! or May Day basket. or just on the floor.)

These books remind me of cozy quilts, and oatmeal cookies, and hot cocoa, and windy days with pinwheels, and macaroni and cheese. There is comfort food, and there are also comfort food books. Don't let these little treasures slip away from you!

  2. "There once was a boy named Pierre, who only would say, 'I don't care...'" I adore these books. And Carole King's Really Rosie show and songs. The girls and I can't read the books without singing them. They are the best!

I would love to get my hands on the other out-of-print Nutshell libraries: the Hilary Knight Christmas Nutshell and Robert Krauss's The Bunny Nutshell Library. I'm glad the Sendak has stayed in print all these years.

  4. Thanks for the cautionary post- I will certainly be finding this box set! One of my favorite books as a little girl was Maurice Sendak's "Higglety Pigglety Pop"- have you read that one? I think it's still in my dad's bookshelf, so I'll be finding that one too...

  5. I bought this for my kids a year ago for Christmas. And they promptly lost One was Johnny. They love the other ones, but they don't fit neatly in the little box anymore. Which bothers type A me. I really should just have my own set. :-)

    1. Bethaney I am SO sorry, your comment was caught in my spam folder, I just rescued it! Ha ha ha, yes I can see how that would be Very Annoying Indeed not to have them fitting together all nicely. You can get another one and keep it just for you! :)
