plums on a plate

July 27, 2015

So, I promise that we'll see some BOOKS really soon. Day after tomorrow. I double pinky swear! I miss blogging!! I have books to show!! There's been a steady stream of relatives blowing through town. I don't think we've had a weekend to sit and watch the grass blow in months. Does that ever happen for anybody? I'm going to start making that happen more. It's hard because weekends are often the only time to see friends and family, but if every weekend is that way, it almost feels like there hasn't been any weekend, you know? I know you know.

More and more, I fantasize about moving into a little cottage and watching the grass and the breeze blow. Or signing up for those retreats where you spend a couple of days in total silence. I think I could do that quite happily right now.

The kiddo is feeling fried - we've been doing fun things but in the past three weeks, I think she's had a 10pm or nearly a 10pm bedtime four times. I'm going to put a serious bedtime smackdown on our family. How do you all handle this in summer time? I mean, one big family dinner began at 5pm in a restaurant for heaven's sake, and we still didn't get home until nearly ten. How could we have begun any earlier?? And when we saw 'Wicked' recently, we didn't get home until past 10, because we could only get tickets to a 6pm show. Am I making too much of this? I know when she melts down before bed all the time, that bedtimes are happening TOO LATE.

Also, I really need to crack down on MORE SUMMER READING and less screen time. We have some videogame mania happening (cough, Andrew) and not enough reading happening. I'm thinking about locking up the gaming devices for the rest of the summer. Too harsh? Tell me how you all are handling the summer reading versus screen time for your kiddos, if you would be so kind.

So that was a lot of frenzied griping from me. Let's pause and talk about plums on a plate. There have been some amazing plums at the market recently, and I found this old plate at a local thrift shop. It was a steal and I looked at it, went home, thought about it some more, and then went back the next day and got it.

  1. I do that...talk myself out of buying something then go back later to get it, only sometimes its gone and I kick myself for not getting it to begin with ;)

Two days of silence and watching the wind blow - I'm all in...can it be somewhere cooler, somewhere not 100 degrees!

I'm reading Far From the Maddening Crowd by Thomas Hardy, a perfect read if you want to slow down.

  3. Oh, dear. Our bedtime is usually 10 during the school year. (They get up at 7:45 on school days.) So, um, our summer bedtimes have been HORRIBLE. And school starts in 3 weeks, so I know I should fix it, but first, we have a camping trip and a sleepover to get through...

I've read a few things, but not nearly as much as I thought I would. I, too, have had too much screen time. I need to do a Friday reading round-up post, but sadly, I may wait and do one big summer wrap-up, at the rate I'm going...

    1. A summer wrap up sounds lovely! My annual summer reading list is rapidly turning into an end-of-summer reading list, start-of-fall list......

  4. Our kids keep staying up til 11 and sleeping til 9. It probably isn't ideal, but the nights are so much cooler and the days are so hot!

    1. oh man, if Julia would only sleep in! But she gets up at 6:30 whether she goes to bed late or early.....it's a problem, I tell you! Although she does tend to do the bulk of her reading for the day when she wakes up in the morning lol, because I do NOT get up at 6:30am!!!!!
