the reindeer wish

It's DECEMBERRRRRRR, says I in my best Oprah voice. I'll do more blogging (probably) in this one month than I've done in the past six. I could look at Christmas stuff all day long, and I want to show you as much of it as I can. Starting with 'The Reindeer Wish', the newest creation from the geniuses who wrote and photographed 'The Christmas Wish' last year. (And 'The Tiny Wish', which came out earlier this past January.)

Anja, the real life daughter of the creators, is back in another adventure - this time, she befriends a reindeer baby and raises it on her own. They do everything together - attend school, go fishing, travel the countryside, and see the Northern Lights - and eventually the reindeer meets Santa and becomes part of his sled team. Anja loses one friend, but gains another - Santa gives her a puppy to take home with her.

Those of you who have been reading my blog for awhile, you know that I'm just A LITTLE obsessed with all things Scandinavian. (And Japanese. And British. Does fairyland count as its own country? Because I'm obsessed with that as well.)

So I loooove books set in the Nordic lands - the Moomins, Astrid Lindgren's books, the holiday works of Jan Brett, the Ricka Dicka Flicka series, TOMTES - I really can't ever get enough. The setting lends itself so magically to Christmastime. And this book is no exception.

 Bag full of puppies? Check.

What's amazing about this story, aside from the stunning and creative photography, is how fun and colorfully the magic of Christmas is depicted. It's the ultimate in wish fulfillment. Who wouldn't long to be swept up in a magical holiday adventure in a snowy land, seeing magical lights in the sky with your best friend WHO'S A REINDEER, and running into Santa?

If you have a collection of holiday books going on, I can't praise the 'Wish' books enough. BIG. Glorious photos and the story is dense enough not to bore older kids, and simple enough to keep littles entertained. My almost 10 year old saw me getting the photos ready for today's post and requested that I drop the book off into her room when I was done. We don't own the other two books, but when I saw this drop into the bookstore, I was like, I WON'T BE DENIED THIS TIME, and I snatched it up to join our permanent holiday collection.

Does it sound ridiculous to say that this is full of holiday magic? It's full of holiday magic. As many pictures as I showed you, I didn't even show the very best ones, because I didn't want to spoil everything! When Julia is particularly excited about something, she tells me, "Mama, it gives me a good feeling." This book gives you a good feeling. It just jump started my holiday and I think you guys need to get on this one asap. It's lovely.

  2. Ack, I gotta get this one! I still to own A Christmas Wish, too! We checked The Tiny Wish out from the library last week, because there are holds on A Christmas Wish, and they don't have this one at all. Sigh. Too many books, so little time...

    1. Sister, you know I feel your pain. I always so outraged when I try to place a hold at the library and there are people in front of me. I'm like, HOW DARE THEY. Getting in the way of me and the book I want! ha :)

    2. I bought it. Stuck it in the largest bag of the Advent calendar. We may not own the first one, but that's okay.
