Happy Friday, my friends. No exclamation point today. What a sad week. I'm particularly bewildered and sad about the loss of Alan Rickman. His work and his films meant so much to me. Toss that into the salad of sick extended family members, and well....it's hard to be a grownup. So my Winter Window post will move to Monday, unless some other calamity falls out of the sky. A bright spot though - the cake you see above - Nigel Slater's Whole Wheat, Apple and Marmalade Cake. My husband was like, "why are you making that." (he never understands why someone would make the choice to make cake instead of cookies.) And I was like, "BECAUSE I'VE BEEN LOOKING AT THIS RECIPE FOR 3 YEARS AND I WANT TO MAKE IT. Any more questions?" So I made it. And may I say what a happy and pleasant little cake it was. My daughter ADORED it, she ate it for breakfast, she ate it for afternoon snack, every day until it was gone. It's not a fluffy cake type of cake - it's more like a giant muffin/scone cake, and you need to butter it and heat it up a bit each time you eat it. It was very nice and not too sweet and it went great with tea and hot chocolate and I suggest you try it.
Things online that were NOT sad:
A roundup of zombie books for kids and teens.
Coconut yogurt breakfast bowl.
A tea tasting party!
A friend sent me the link to some incredible art - you must see.
Anatomy of a weeknight dinner.
Loved this bit about David Bowie from Ricky Gervais. Watch the first video, wait for the last line....it's priceless.
And beautiful words from my friend Julia.
If you didn't see this Adele karaoke video going around - here you go - your whole day will feel happier, I promise.
Really love these photos.
Did you all see my post about one of the most beautiful fairy tale books in the world?
Cool Book of the Week: Speaking of fairy tales.....came across 'The Sleeper and the Spindle' by the great Neil Gaiman this week. It looks fantastic. Love the art by Chris Riddell! A mish mash of 'Sleeping Beauty' and 'Snow White', it's a graphic novel aimed at middle grade readers and above. In this take on the two classic fairy tales, Snow White is a Queen investigating the rise of a 'sleeping sickness' that is slowly invading her land....
'Sense & Sensibility'. And I'll be opening and closing cookbooks, trying to decide what birthday cake to make for myself next week. It's usually the same cake. It's usually chocolate. Julia wants to help this year! - she said she wanted to make the whole thing herself, but I think we'll baby step our way into that process.....
