the lunar new year

Happy Year of the Dog, my friends. Except.....I don't feel like it's happy and I don't feel happy, and I would hazard that a lot of you aren't happy either. Let me just address this and then I'll show the rest of my pictures from the soiree we had here last week to celebrate Julia's birthday party and to usher in the Lunar New Year.

I'M OUTRAGED by what is going on in our country. I'm speechless with rage. I felt like crawling into a hole after Sandy Hook, and NOTHING has changed. This is madness. All I can say is....all those people 'in charge' right now? Their time is coming, and they won't be 'in charge' forever. Our kids are growing up and they won't tolerate this ANY MORE.

So I decorated my little heart out for the Lunar New Year, setting up paper lanterns here and there, getting rice candies, peanut sesame cookies and orange jelly candies, chocolate coins and lucky New Year envelopes for the party favor bags - oh  I got a pack of mixed variety bracelets and broke those up for the bags as well. I follow the same method for choosing things for my book boxes that I do for party favor bags - try and find sets of things and break them up!

Julia went online and found the Chinese character translations for each of her friends names, and then wrote them on the bags - that was her job because she has muuuuuuuuch better handwriting than I do.

I already had these beautiful floral chinoiserie-inspired placemats that my aunty made me for me a few years ago, and I already had my blue floral plates that I found in some random shop about a decade ago. I got orange chicken and dumplings from Trader Joe's, noodles and fortune cookies from a takeout place nearby, and made a lemon and blueberry birthday cake, which had been requested by the birthday girl.

And I found the Year of the Dog cup thingy at World Market. It all looked really festive, and I think even the small gaggle of tween girls attending the evening appreciated the effect.

The girls all seemed really delighted with their goody bags. I gotta tell you - I'm OBSESSED with party favor bags. I take it as a personal challenge every year to up my game from whatever bag I had created the year before. Looking back, I can see that the writing was on the wall when it came to the Book Boxes  - I've always been all about the mystery surprise bag thing ha ha!

So happy Lunar New Year to you! I'm wishing peace and happiness for us all.

  1. This is so cool. I'm jealous. My house is a dark, dank mess after mess and I'm coughing like crazy, and all I can concentrate on is selling GS cookies and helping organize a talent show I have no real interest in. These pictures are so joyous and colorful and I wish I were with you (sans cough, of course). xoxo

    1. remember! everything online is a trick! my house has been a dark grey black hole - i had to up the exposure on these pix something fierce to get them to look decent ;) -- and i've been feeling definitely NOT colorful and joyous, that's for sure. Feel better! If we lived closer I'd make you tea and cookies. xoxo

  2. this is beautiful. And yes, I understand the feelings of helplessness and total furious-ness as well at what is going on in the world. So frustrating and scary.

Happy Lunar New Year to you and yours. ♥ ♥ ♥
